Photoshop CC: My rotate tool in 3d is erratic (64 bit Win 8.1)

Less than 3wks old: Envy 700-56 64 bit 12GB memory windows 8 updated to 8.1 Installed CC and updated as instructed. First off I moved from CS3 and I love CC except:
When in 3d the rotate tool will only move on horizontal plan sometime. If I'm correct
the rotate tool should move the subject and the plane on hor. and vert. axis with almost infinite positioning when the move icon is placed in the left lower corner of the file. (RedBlueGreen arrows dims when placing rotate icon there} When placed outside the lower corner same movements but the grid doesn't move. This is fantastic except sometimes it will only move on a hor. axis. Also, when this happens
using the tool inside the object is not infinite or smooth. Example. I want to tilt text forward - I move the pointer along the yellow ring and nothing happens and then it jumps to about a 45 degree tilt, move bank and goes back to 0, no in between.
Also, the secondary window showing diff. view no longer shows up.

This problem comes and goes without me changing anything. Example: I have saved 3d files that were working perfectly when I closed them and I reopen them and they are not working correctly. Also, I can stop working on a file for a few minutes and come back to it and it has stopped working properly. Thought my card might not be up to the task, but how can it work perfectly for hours. It has worked right for about 75% of the time for the last day and half but still aggravating. Also, crashed 3 times working on the same file. (recovered) Started over from scratch and it worked fine. Sorry this is so long.
