I am trying to remove a background on a picture. The only layer I have listed is background, but it's the whole picture. I'm soooo lost!

I'm sorry to tell you, but if you have only a single layer, then it's now easy to change the background layer. You'll have to separate the elements manually.

You need to select the subject and copy that selection to the clipboard and save that to a new file.
How this is done depends on the application you are using. I am familiar with Elements so if you use another app someone else will have to help with the details.
