My computer says it has stopped working. I have subscribed for a one year membership ending this autumn 2015

What OS/version are you running on?

When you say it stopped working, what is the exact behavior? Do you get an error?

I am a computer dinosaur, so I do not know what OS means. my computer says "stopped working" when I try to open the program. My illustrator and indesign are fine.

Sounds like you are on Windows, as opposed to Mac.

I would suspect a bad video driver.

Determine what video card you have and go *directly to the manufacturers website (nVidia or ATI/AMD)* and download the latest driver: http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/201...

Just doing Windows Update won't give you the latest and greatest drivers. You must go directly to your card manufacturers website to check for driver updates.

but I can open illustrator and indesign (and yes, I have windows 8). Does Photoshop need a different video card? and thanks for your help. I find computers overwhelming.

Correct. Photoshop leverages the GPU (graphics card) deeper than InDesign and Illustrator. Updating the video card driver should fix your problem.
