Photoshop CS5: Will not open

I recently had the need to reinstall the operating system on my Mac Book Pro. I have had Photoshop installed in 2011 and was working ok but I did have the occasional problem after speaking with my husband he said the he had to install Java to make it work properly. However since I did the reinstall if the operating system Photoshop will not open at all. It gets to either the initialising or looking for plug ins stage and then just hangs. When I check the icon it lets me know that the application is not responding and I need to force quit it to exit.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled photoshop, I have rebooted my system and yet it still will not go past this stage, can someone please help me.

You said you're on MacOS 10.10?

\We have seen a similar issue on MacOS 10.10 where the OS hangs while trying to access a network server volume or external disk drive in some cases. Users either umounted those drives, or re-mounted them to get the OS past it's attempt to access those volumes.

You could get more information by sampling the application using the Activity Monitor. That would tell us more about where the application is hanging.

Ok I have tried un mounting external drive I then tried to start CS5 no luck
I remounted external drive and starting CS5 still no luck. I have activity monitor open but I have no idea what I am meant to look for. It says in red Photoshop (Not responding)

Double click on the Photoshop process, that'll open the app information window. In that window is a button at the bottom that says "sample". Clicking that will take samples for a few seconds, then produce a window with a LOT of text. you can try to trim the text to just what is Photoshop (and not the rest of the system), or you can zip up the text file and send it to ccox [at] adobe [dot] com.

The sample log she sent showed Photoshop scanning plugins - either a LOT of plugins, or the OS scanning the disk slowly.

There could have a lot of plugins, or may have accidentally moved the application and it's trying to scan most of the disk...

Starting up without plugins (by holding down shift while launching) should help narrow down the cause.
