Photoshop: My colors are all wrong

In Photoshop, when I use the color replacement tool, or even the brush options with selected colors, the color I pick appears totally wrong on my image (white looks dirty brown; yellow becomes violet, etc.--none of them are right); however, when I place (or embed) the file in Illustrator, the colors look fine: the ones I chose. So, I don't think it's a video card or a monitor calibration issue. I followed the instructions to make a duplicate layer and work on that instead of on the background layer. I tried creating an adjustment layer--nothing fixed this.

So your brush tool is painting an unexpected color? Is the Mode in the Brush tool options bar set to "Normal"?

If not, set it to "Normal" or reset the tool: http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/201...
