Lightroom: Extra/Multiple folders on import

When I import a picture into lightroom for some reason it has started creating a new copy of the folder that it is being imported into on the top of the folders tree. For example if I have an existing folder named "import" inside "my pictures" (windows 7) and I try to import into it there will be a second copy of "import" created in lightroom above "my pictures" where the photos will be imported into. In windows explorer they are one and the same and if I synchronize the folder to get them to be one folder nothing happens. I have even tried dragging the photos from one import folder to the other, but I get an error that the files already exist in that destination. It is frustrating that lightroom displays multiple folders with different pictures in each that in reality are the same folder. can someone please help me fix this issue. I have been a lightroom user since version 3 and am now a CC subscriber. this wasn't a problem in other versions

It sounds as though you've run into a problem that is caused by Lightroom's case-sensitivity in regard to folder names. To check this, and to advise how to fix it, you need to post a couple of screenshots: one of the Folders Panel in Lightroom which shows the duplicate folder names, and the other a Windows Explorer view of the same folder on the hard drive (make sure to include the full path as shown in the top Explorer bar).

I'm having this same problem on a mac. I've been searching for someone to see if they were in the same boat. I'll post some screen grabs. I don't think it is the case-sensitivity issue, as I do an import and have LR find the raw files on my SD card, and then I point it to where I want them converted to DNG's. So LR is using the folder structure it sees to place them in the proper place.
When the import is done... I see the folder on the left panel, above where it should be, in another image of my storage hard drive. (a DataTale 12GB raid 0)
If I drag the errant folder from above to where it should be, in the lower drive image, LR gives an error saying that folder already exists. I've been able to drag it to the lower drive to a higher folder level, then the upper drive disappears... and I'm then able to drag it to the proper place. But on the next import, the same dance happens.

I'm working with:
late 2013 iMac, system 10.9.2, LightRoom 5.3, Canon 6D, LightRoom catalog size approx. 121,000 photos

In my case this problem was due to the image folders becoming 'read only' when I copied them to a bigger drive. Undoing the read only in the drives 'properties' allowed LR/CC to work normally again.

I fixed my problem by completely replacing my catalog and syncing a new one to all my photos. (over 100,000... so it took a night) The problem has not returned in over 5 months, so I'm pretty sure my original catalog was corrupt. I'm just glad I used dng's and all corrections and keywords were retained within the original files!
