mpeg2 in lightroom

Hello I am having trouble importing mpeg2 movies. I have a lot of old family movies I took with my Panasonic SV-AV100 Digital Camcorder D-Snap. It recorded the movings in Mpeg2. I was able to organize and view them along with all my photos in iPhoto and the new photos for OS X . I recently switched to using lightroom and it is very good for photos but I can not use it to organize my movies. I don't need to edit the movies, just to keep them organized with star ratings. I know I can convert the mpeg2 movies to another video format with quicktime, but this degrades the image quality, I would rather use my original movie files like I could with iPhoto.

If you do a little searching, I think you'll find that this a topic that's come up numerous times over the years and the stock answer is that LR doesn't support MPEG2 for licensing reasons.

Here's LR's list of supported file formats. For video, you get AVI, MOV, & MP4.

Thank you for your help. It is disappointing that I can't use lightroom to view my family movies because of licensing. It seems that shouldn't be the case because they are movies I took myself so there is no copyright issue. Because I can use quicktime or iPhoto to view them, my computer should already have whatever license is needed for the video format.
