Lightroom: Moving older photos from C to external drive

I currently have my photos organised by year and month, going back to 2006. Only the 2010 and 2011 are included in the LR catalogue. I usually keep the current and past year on my C drive, with older years held on an external drive (and bcked up to a second external drive). What will happen when I move the 2010 photos to the external HD? Will the LR catalogue still be able to find them or is there something I have to do to maintain the link between catalogue and original photo? Thanks.

Olivia,

You can go either of 2 paths:

  • Move the folder 2010 using Explorer/Finder to your external drive. Then start LR. You'll see a "?" right next to the folder 2010 indicating it's missing. Right-click on the folder and choose "Find missing Folder", pointing to to moved folder on your external drive.
You should have your folder panel in such a way that the folder "2010" is shown on a single line for easy reconnect. If that's not the case, perform "Add Parent Folder" on the lower level folders until you see "2010" on a distinct line.

  • Move the folder "2010" from within LR (drag/drop) to the external drive. That way, all the links in the catalog will remain intact.

I would recommend the second option that Beat suggests. A general rule, it's best to do all moving/organizing of files in Lightroom so that it's able to see and track the changes.

I currently have my entire Lightroom4 database on my internal iMac disk drive. How do I safely transfer everything to an external drive without losing any linkages, etc. so that I can work on my photographs using either my IMac at home or my PowerBook when traveling?
