Photoshop: Ability to use the mouse wheel to zoom

Using Ctrl+ and Ctrl- to zoom is cumbersome and it's sometimes difficult to get the degree of zoom I want. It makes detailed editing quite difficult at times.

I work in CAD all day and zooms and pans are all done with the mouse wheel. Wheel up for zoom in, wheel down for zoom out, hold down the wheel and move the mouse for pan. This makes life wonderfully easier. Why can't Photoshop, Lightroom and Bridge utilize the same system?

Which product are you requesting this for?

Photoshop has had option-mousewheel for zooming for quite some time. And you can't zoom without a modifier because that would conflict with normal scrolling behavior.

You can turn it on in settings without key modifiers.

In Lightroom-
Holding [Ctrl+ Scroll wheel] will zoom, BUT it only steps through the available zoom ratio settings that appear above the navigator panel. It is not 'infinitely' zoomable!
Also the Space-Bar will toggle the zoom setting between the last two used zoom settings, eg. Fit / 1:1

Preferences >Tools...

enable "Zoom with Scroll Wheel"

Or try using scrubby zoom. Hold down the Z key and drag left and right.
