In After Effects you can chose the round selection tool and doubleclick on a layer, then a selection will be created that is an elipse that touches the boarders of the image - great for vignetting and other things.
Also I would like to be able to create a rectangular selection of say 512 x 256 px without dragging and watching the info until I'm just there.

I don’t contest the merit of your request, but if you don’t want to wait for a potential inclusion in future upgrades you could use Scripts for such tasks.

An action similar to below, just set the ruler units to percent before recording the action.

Thanks for your replies I actually did not know that.
I'd still prefer a doubleclick to loading scripts. (Christoph, are you German?)
MTSTUNER: That is a good idea, but I would have to rescale if I wanted a different size of picture, right?

In Gimp, you can resize your selection by dragging the corners or entering the values manually (exactly how i like it) after you let go of the mouse.

No, I’m not German, but I live in one of the german-language countries neighbouring Germany.

Yes.
But I don’t much care about the national soccer-team’s losses ...
