Photoshop: More options for Patterns

It would be very useful to change the distance between tiles of a pattern, and have different tiling options such as regular tiling or brick tiling where the rows alternate. This would allow me to for instance create a single pixel tile and then have a huge range of variations of patterns.

Also useful for more easily creating patterns since you can tweak it during application, rather than creation.

Are you trying to do things like polka dots with variable spacing? Do you expect transparency or a solid color between the pattern stamps?

Offering other tiling options is an interesting idea. Mirrored tiling would also be useful in some cases, in addition to "step and repeat" and "offset step and repeat" (aka bricks).

Exactly! Polka dots, butterflies, fishes, whatever :-)

Allowing overlap of tiles could also be very useful for more easily creating patterns like this: http://veerle-v2.duoh.com/blog/commen...

Basically it would allow you to put patterns (polka dots, swirls, whatever) inside a puzzle piece shape, and then fit the shapes together through overlap (providing you set a transparent bg to the pattern).

Like this: http://edw.me/1t2D2Z2m0w2T3H2x2I0t

The controls would be something like:

Repeat: Tile, Brick
Mirror: [√]
Scale: 0%_________100%
X offset/spacing: -100%______0%_____100%
Y offset/spacing: -100%______0%_____100%

Hmm, overlap would be a problem - because we'd have to copy the pattern multiple times in the same output location, and couldn't guarantee the order of drawing. I think it's solveable, it'll just take a bit of time.

(positive) spacing, mirror, offset/phase -- those are relatively painless, once we figure out where to put the information in the UI and document.

Currently it's possible to move a pattern's offset using the mouse. I'd love that to be exposed in the Layer Styles options, so we can enter values in directly.

Marc, I'm talking about offset between tiles not offset of entire pattern. :-)

Ok. Pattern offset for the entire pattern would be great as well, because it exists now, but there's no way to see or edit it.
