Lightroom: Better Edit-History Descriptions (to go with those other improvements...)

I love Lightroom's edit-history. Its one of the most awesome and powerful features in Lightroom - probably the single most enjoyable aspect of editing in Lightroom, for me (I love comparing edited states and backing up to redo steps...)

But, there is room for Adobe to tap it some more.

In addition to the other improvements that have been suggested (copy/paste, condensation/consolidation), I'd add.

- Better step descriptions:

Instead of just: "Add Brush Stroke", how about:
Add Brush Stroke (pin name/id, stroke number +maybe-even: start/end coordinates).
Where pin name defaults to pin sequence-number/ID+location, but can be changed by user. And give strokes a sequence/ID number...
Ditto for all the others: Crop Rectangle (e.g. from-to), Update Contrast Adjustment (of what?). Add Graduated Filter (which one where...)
+Date/Time for each edit.

Maybe a switch for verbose vs. clean (descriptions) to go with the collapse/expand option of the other aforementioned feature-request/id.

Summary:
------------
Along with the abilities to condense and copy-paste selected steps, better edit-history descriptions would help...

Final thoughts:
------------------
I'd like to see an engineer at Adobe put his/her thinking cap on and just robusten the heck out of the edit-history list! - Unlock the imagination, and just go for it!!

Good thinking, Rob.

Do you see part 2 of my similar proposal as equivalent to this FR here?

Yeah, I think you mentioned better edit-step names/descriptions as a part of your FR/Idea, that's all this one was. Presently its a "Sherlock Holmes" feat to try and find one's way in the history list. Better names would be easy to do, although I agree that it would go well the other improvements that you and others have suggested.

?

Wouldn't it be better to be able to see the name and location of the pin to which a brush stroke was added? And see the date time it was added, and be able to single click to see the stroke on the image, or double-click to open the corresponding pin for additional strokes...

Please consider voting for this request: it wouldn't take much developer resources nor computer resources and would make the edit-history far more useful and convenient.

Personally, I'd like to see better descriptions as one of many edit-history improvements, like the click actions referred to above, the ability to condense, filter, structure, sort, annotate, edit... But even just being able to better tell what was really done at a given step would be a step in the right direction, in my opinion.

Not just brush strokes but all the steps could stand an optional date-time in the view, and names + locations... This has already been done for the publish step where it gives not only step type (publish), but publish service name + date-time. I'm suggesting it would be useful to do the same for exports (include the export name), and pertinent info for all the rest of the entries in the edit-history too.

Reminder: one could have view modes to omit or include things (in case user is presently OK with a less cluttered but less informative view), and excluded things could then be available as tool-tips or rollover instead. Or something like that...

Rob, I'd present your scenario as follows:

|> Adjustment Brush "Sky TouchUp"
    - Add Brush Stroke [1/25/2011 2:00:40 PM]
    - Add Brush Stroke [1/25/2011 2:00:39 PM]

|> Adjustment Brush "Enhanced Flower Petals"
    - Add Brush Stroke [9/25/2010 1:13:49 PM]
    - Add Brush Stroke [9/25/2010 1:13:43 PM]

|> Adjustment Brush "Contrast Reduction"
    - Add Brush Stroke [8/15/2010 9:01:03 AM]

The "|>"s are meant to be triangles which you could use to collapse the individual brush strokes. Usually we are just interested in a set of strokes that belong together (and are represented by one editing pin), aren't we? So I think grouping the strokes like above and making the collapsible makes sense.

I wasn't sure what the "(3,15)"s meant, so I left them out.

Yeah, this would be awesome TK. I can see wanting to view them chronologically or membership-alogically, depending on circumstances: if knowing that you want one of the most recent things you did, maybe chrono. When visiting a month later, not chrono...

The (3,15) was the coordinates of the pin, which I was imagining being part of the default name. Hopefully one could edit the pin names and take that out, or maybe it could just be a view option to include locations or not. All fine points to be worked out...
