Monochrome button in Channel Mixer does not revert to color when unchecked

I usually use the Channel Mixer to convert color images to black and white.

I will make an adjustment layer of Channel Mixer.
Then I will check the Monochrome box and adjust my image.

If I uncheck the monochrome box, the image remains in Black and White and the only way I can get the layer to work in color is to throw the adjustment layer away and create a new one.

Is there a reason behind this?

My instincts would expect the image to go back to color if I uncheck the Monochrome box.

Try it and you will see the same 'error'....

That is correct, that's how that works.

Yes, the reason is that it is a common workflow to want "just off monochrome" adjustments: so you turn monochrome on and get a monochrome result, then that is copied back to your color results when you turn it off.

You can also just click "reset" to go back to the previously used settings.
