Photoshop: Modified Smart/Linked objects revert to original reference dimensions after updating

I am a UX/UI artist for a game studio. We are currently developing a workflow which would rely heavy on PS and the use of smart/linked objects for creating our game screens (essentially as our game editor).

My issue is when using smart object that are altered. For efficiency and a smaller asset footprint, I create assets such as buttons and popups, as 3 or 9 slice images. these images are a .psd consisting of the base art on one layer, and another layer defining the margins for slices and tiling. When i make a smart object of this .psd, i am then able to slice and tile the buttons for example to the size and scale desired. my issue is... When i update the original reference (smart/linked object) file or attempt to alter scale, the asset immediately reverts to the source file dimensions, ignoring any modifications made in the top level file. this feels like a bug which can and will prove to be a huge issue moving forward. Can we expect a fix for this soon?
