Mixer brush question

I'm new to Mixer brushes and have yet to find a really good explanation of how they work.  The best I have found so far is Julianne Kost's video Painting in Photoshop (Part 2).  Early in the video, Julianne says that she is not using the natural media brushes "for a reason."  Unfortunately, she never explains the reason!  I'm having difficulty replicating her examples, and I suspect that her unexplained reason may have some bearing on my difficulty.  I'm using Photoshop CC 2015.5 and a Wacom Intuos4 tablet.

For example, if I use a low Load on a dry canvas, the non-media brushes run out of paint quickly, but the natural media brushes never run out!

If you know the reason, or have a suggestion of what I can try, or can give me a reference where I can find the answer for myself, I would be most appreciative!
