Elements: Missing Text in Pull-Down Menus after Windows 10 Update

A new update of Windows 10 has wrecked my Photoshop Elements 10. All text is missing from the pull-down menus. Tried Windows Update and then re-installing Elements 10 with no improvement. Is this a known issue? Are there new drivers or anything that will get my Photoshop working again?

I have Photoshop Elements 10. I have installed it and used it. All of a sudden the menu bar has disappeared. I do not know how to bring it back.

This might help everyone here:   

Here's my standard answer for this problem, but first I need to say, Adobe does not support versions before PSE13.  But I will do whatever I can for now.  The uninstall/reinstall does work.  
This has been in other forums where a guy still reinstalled it a 3rd time and it finally worked.  
So it it doesn't at first, keep trying.   Meanwhile, I will run my standard answer about resets.  

There are resets for this PSE and Windows 10, too.  I will not drag all of you into a SFC reset which is merely the same thing, and needs lots of commands in the Windows Power Shell.   


Option-1
In PSE, open an image.  On the far-right is a question mark (?) and next to that is a down-menu with "Reset-all".  Click that.  That will reset all of its tools and it should be good for now.   

Option-2
If that doesn't work, go to Windows 10 Settings.  Click on System.  Your applications will load in the middle.  Click on your application to highlight it (only).   If you see a blue hypertext link below its title that says "Advanced Options" click that.  On the next page on the left, is a RESET button.  Click that.  

If you don't have a blue hypertext link below the title, each app may give that opportunity only once.  

Option-3

Whenever there is an update that knocks out a driver, I reinstall it.  Another in a forum recently reinstalled his on the 3rd try and it worked.  Do not give up on it.  

Option-4

You can disable the update, but it will come again.  If you want to do this one: go back to settings, go to Update History, on the next page you may click on updates and find the latest update and remove it.  

Option-5
There is another reset as a last resort, and it may take a little work and I usually skip this one:  
Go to Settings, Update, then click on Recovery on the left.  This gives you choices:  You can restart Windows which will load it all over again, to its defaults and will not harm your apps or files.  
OR - You can go back to an earlier build with the Restore feature but you may encounter the same update in the future, and anything you did with a file or app will be canceled.   
OR - You can start up from a disc which you probably won't have so you can disregard this one.  

Now I've given you everything.  These are your choices.  My choice would be to reinstall.  

My last suggestions:  Get PSE15.  You can run your old PSE along with it, but launch the older version before the later version, or the later one will stall on launch.  OR you can delete the older version (I would) and reboot to clear it completely, then install the latest version.  You may like it. 

Not Like Photoshop CC there is no subscription for the Elements versions (yet).   So, Get it!

this is an unforgiveable program development error! even the latest version of PSE doesn't work right. here's the 'book answer' since Adobe isn't supporting your version: https://helpx.adobe.com/elements-organizer/kb/mouse-cursor-not-visible-or-menus-not-opening.html 

I have to do both: deselect taskbar hiding and click the restore in upper right.

I find it hard to believe that they would require me to configure my system to suit them, but that's Adobe for you.

That's nice you found a solution online but explain exactly it in detail.  
Did you do this instruction before bring it here?  

For instance, when I right-click on a taskbar in Windows 10, nothing happens.  
Most readers will ask how you did this. It's old instructions for Win-XP to Win-7.  
Most of these people have Windows 10.  
   
In Windows 10, go to Settings, click Personalization, then click on Taskbar.  
On the right you will find switches to turn it off, or on.

Well, this fix didn't last long.  I believe another Windows update erased the required fonts, because my Elements 10 is once again missing the menu text.  I tried the fix again, but this time it doesn't appear to work anymore.

If I might intervene.  

I also have elements 10 and mine does not have this problem with Windows 10.  
Please remain calm while I explain the following (for now):  

The reason that the updates are deleting the fonts is that Windows 10 does not support those fonts.  The reason behind it are several:  1) The fonts were copyrighted by a company and cannot be used by the general public anymore.  2) the fonts are known to disrupt Windows functionality.  

In case you are questioning #2, this was the exact problem in the beginning of Windows - in version 3.11 and Windows XP as some fonts disrupted Windows from functioning.  Eliminating certain fonts fixed the problem.  One of the fonts was "Helvetica" which was taken out of the system.  Along the way, Microsoft will update Windows with these fixes.   Putting them back in, the updates will clean them up again.  There are certain types of problems that having certain fonts will fix but I don't think this is one of them.  I think your problem is the relationship between your program and Windows 10 as assuming you are working with a 64 bit environment.   

I gave what resets I can give.  BUT I can give ONE more fix.  It may not work, and it will go into the DOS area of Windows and will be scary for you.  You must have Windows 10 and at the end of the fix, it may say there was no fixes to find.   But it may have fixed Elements at least temporarily.

Here's the fix:  (then I will conclude)
Launch the command prompt as a system administrator. 
In that window, type "sfc.exe/scannow" and enter.  Let it work.
This utility will detect corrupt files and attempt to fix them.
This is the same reset as noted above, but in DOS.

If it detects files it cannot repair, it's time to consider another
Elements version.  At Microsoft we say, "keep current".   
Your Elements version is an old version.  Adobe no longer supports it.  
I took the time with what I can do to fix it.  I think it's time to move upward.   

Also, if there are error messages that show page-frames with all zeros, it means
it is corrupt as it relocated to the root directory of Windows - a dangerous area.  
If it is corrupt, your drive could be endangered.   You need to remove Elements.   
Save your drive.

Thank you, Steve.  I was relieved to find no integrity violations.  I will uninstall Elements 10 and look for a different vendor that produces a product not known to be at war with Microsoft.

Gilbert, give it a chance to work.  I think Sandeep has the menu fix, and his font-fix has been known to fix the menu problems in V10 and V11.   I only ran a few Windows 10 fixes to help it along a bit.  Sandeep is trying to help with fixes for Windows update problems.   None of us developed Windows 10 nor its updates.   Thanks for your patience going forward.

Does it matter to anyone that there is a version 14, 15 and now 2018?   I have version 10 also, but if it didn't work, I wouldn't hesitate to move forward to a new version.  I won't beat on my dead horse.

Actually, I eventually sanitized my system of all things Adobe, in anticipation of searching out some other solution.  Then several days later I wondered what would happen if re-installed Elements.  Surprisingly, it now works normally.  So far, recent updates haven't trashed Elements yet.

Microsoft appears to be competing with Adobe and the updates to Windows 10 seem to be nothing more than a tool to destroy Adobe products from functioning.  I've had three updates activate on their own only to screw up my Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 has no drop down menus.  The only solution I found was to restore to an earlier version and block updates to Windows 10.   If this isn't some kind of corporate strategy by Microsoft to force people to buy new software and eliminate use of Adobe products, it sure looks like one.

I have Windows 10 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 15.  When I got Windows 10 loaded by MS, I lost the ability to add text onto a photo.  If I try, I get a message saying: "could not complete your request because something prevented the text engine from being initialized."  The font showing is: "Baskerville Old Face Regular."  If I try to change the font, I get: "Photoshop Elements 15 Editor has stopped working."  The only option is to close the program.  I have been frustrated reading all the information and wondering if I have the same problem as other people.  The fonts work fine with other programs, so I'm wondering if the fonts are the problem or is there something else.  I have Elements 9 also, so I tried that and it does the same thing!

I had a problem with PSE10 with text missing from drop down menus after windows 10 update. On line I found an explanation that this was due to missing fonts. From the same source I obtained a file of the missing fonts and installed them and hey presto it worked. That is until I shut down and the problem reappeared. After trial and error I found the following process works. It is a pain but allows me to continue using PSE.
1. Open PSE.
2. Install Fonts ( when message appears saying font already installed do you want to replace it? tick "Do this for all similar items" and click "Yes").
3. Restart computer (NOT shut down)
4. Open PSE

You followed through with the fix, instead of shutting down - you let it work and then restarted your computer to complete the fix.   Everyone should remember to do this.

I'm not sure if I follow you.. Are you saying that I should have installed the fonts, then shutdown and restarted before using PSE? I have tried doing that with and without PSE open and the result is the same -  no text. I have to go through the process I have outlined every time I use PSE.

There are reports that installing the latest Windows 10 Creator Fall update (1709) solves the problem: did you install it? I can't help myself because I don't have the problem. The last update lasted 2 or 3 hours.

Michel and Sandeep has fixed this menu font problem many times and I trust Michel's work.   If there is another update that resolves this problem, go with it.  This problem has existed much too long.  I will rerun Sandeep's menu fix from above in case you missed a step.  

Whenever there is a font problem in menus we fix it with one of three resolutions:   A)  fix the fonts   B) reinstall the app  C) upgrade to a later version - and this is what everybody should be doing.  

The reinstall has proven to fix the menus most often.   The update fix came late.   Here's the font rerun - check your steps.
