Metadata not read / lost if jpeg and raw files are combined

I am using Lightroom 3.6 and also checked this with Lightroom 4.1. Both show the same behaviour.

I have folders which contain both .jpg and raw .nef files, i.e. both are on the same level.
I tagged and rated the jpg pictures in another application before switching to Lightroom. The metadata is stored in the jpg files.

The option to treat jpg and raw as the same picture was enabled. Then I imported the folder into Lightroom. Lightroom did not read the rating or any other user metadata from the jpg but only from the raw files. Thus I lost my rating of all the pictures.

If I disable the option to treat jpg and raw as single pictures and sync the folder, then the jpg files are displayed along with the raw pictures. In this case the jpg display the rating information.

Lightroom does not seem to read jpg metadata such as the rating if the option to combine jpg and raw is enabled.
I expected that the metadata of both files is read into the catalog so no information is lost.

That's the expected behaviour.

You can import raw and jpeg as separate files, then copy metadata from jpeg top raw. There's a plugin for that: Syncomatic.
