Lightroom Classic: Merge to HDR and Panorama doesn't work

  • (Edited)
On a regular basis, I merge 5 bracketed shots from my drone.  In the older LR, this operation took about 1 minute or less.  I could "batch" 5 operations at a time and have them all done in about 3 minutes or less.

With the newer, faster, more awesome (and likely soon-to-be-deprecated) LR, it simply won't do anything.  I was lucky and had one HDR to work, but I've tried countless others (one for nearly two hours) and nothing happens.  The progress bar makes no progress.

I'm really worried that this important feature is simply victim of a bug.

Anyone else having issues?  Adobe, what's up with this??

I'm using a medium-powered PC that has never had problems with merge before.

Dan,
Can you try creating HDR without preview, using keyboard shortcut 'Shift + Ctrl + H' and let us know if this works?
Please share some more information:
  • System Info from 'Help->System Info' menu option
  • Lr language settings
Thanks

Hi Satish,

I was directed to this thread as I am having the same problem as Dan.  I have just tried your suggestion re the keyboard short cuts and that DOES work here.  I presume it has auto-aligned and auto-toned from the result but cannot tell if it applied any de-ghosting.

I use Windows 10, btw.

EDIT: Not certain thias is what you meant by 'LR Language settings' but just in case -

LanguageVersion: 3.30 NVIDIA via Cg compiler

Thank you.

Hi,

No, ctrl+shift+M is not working either - same problem, shows the progress bar, but nothing happens.

Hi, Unfortunately I have the same problem and cannot create HDR images using Photo merge.

It does display the preview pop up window, after selecting 2 or plus images to merge, then when you press merge nothing happen. The bar of "creating HDR" stay still at 0% forever.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled LR, reset the preferences twice and disabled graphic processor, but it still does not work.

Yesterday there was a software update for LR Classic, but the issue was not corrected.

Come on Adobe,  my HDR or Pano does not work as well,  I think I got it to work once since I installed Classic  several days ago,  I've been buying LR since LR2 been using subscription since it was introduced as well.  If I could go back to the latest edition I would,  I need the  dehaze slider and can't use a old version I have.     I've read this thread and have tried everything,  Fix this ASAP someone help!  I have two weeks worth of Vacation photo's  pano's and bracketed stuff that I need to Edit  but this stupid latest edition of LR is not working,   Photoshop can handle the HDR's and pano's  but they don't look as good as the LR one's  . HELP me and the rest of us frustrated PAYING customers  ASAP!

Hi every one, an adobe tech found the origin of the issue and a solution.
In my case was due because I have too many services running and Photo Merge was waiting for a low usage in the system before starting the merge operation. In my case it never started.

So they suggested of: clearing the config.lua file (in the root of lightroom presets folder) and update it with:
Features.disableGlobalTaskManager = true

Restart LR after this change.

In my case it worked perfectly, despite i was still running all the services.

It is also faster than before.

I hope this helps.

I have a closely related issue:

I am currently processing a large set of holiday pictures with Lightroom now Classic CC on Windows 7. I have successfully created several panoramas in the last few days (from 3 to 74 raw pictures) using photomerge.

Since yesterday however (no update, no reboot), photomerge gets stuck at 1/4 of panorama preview creation for any set of pictures (including 3 pictures panorama that were successfully merged previously).

The issue persists through computer reboots, lightroom reboots via the preference menu, and through updating to the latest release. Direct merging with Ctrl Shift M does not even begin to process.

I haven't been able to find a config.lua file.

You can follow the steps below:
  1. Open system info window from 'Help->Syetm Info' menu option.
  2. Copy the location specified against Settings Folder: field.
  3. Open the location copied from above in Explorer(windows) or Finder(mac)
  4. Create a file named config.lua
  5. Add Features.disableGlobalTaskManager = true to the config file.
  6. Restart lightroom
  7. System Info dialog (Help > System Info) should display the config.lua flags entry as shown below
Config.lua flags:
Features.disableGlobalTaskManager = true

pardon my ignorance, but if this is the solution to pano merge, i have no clue how to do this.  i opened 'help-system info' and now i am totally lost to your direction.  not very computer literate apparently.  can you walk a novice thru this?

Satish,
I performed the above steps twice to the letter and the config.lua flags line in System Info indicates no flags...

Config.lua flags: None

I assume this is an unexpected outcome?

Thanks,

Paul,

Can you confirm if 'config.lua' file does not have '.txt' extension i.e. file name is 'config.lua' not 'config.lua.txt' ?

Thanks

Joseph,

Here is a snippet from my system info:

Application folder: /Applications/Adobe Lightroom Classic CC
Library Path: /Users/satish/Pictures/Lr_Cat/Lr_Cat.lrcat
Settings Folder: /Users/satish/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom

You need to navigate to the location corresponding to the highlighted line in the above snipped and create the config file.
Also make sure that the file does not have any txt extension.
Let us know if you need any help.

Thanks

I tried this and while I do see this in System Info

Config.lua flags:
Features.disableGlobalTaskManager = true

it still does not produce a merged photo.

Any other ideas?

Matt,

You can follow the steps shared by Hamishl's to check if you are missing anything while setting up the config.lua file.
Btw, if you are on Lr Classic 7.1 you would not need setting up this config. Lr 7.1 already takes care of this.

My LR version is 6.1.10

I don't know what steps by Hamishl you mean I should follow, I did create the config.lua file and added the line suggested.

I also tried resetting preferences which seemed to be suggested in a post by Hamishl but that did not help (seems to have messed up other things, now I can't get the System Info display to work).

Has Adobe dropped support for LR 6.1.10? I see you mentioning using version 7.

This config flag is introduced and applicable only to Lr version 7.0 onwards.

Does preview window show up when you apply merge operation on the selected photos?
It would be helpful if you can share a screen recording of the issue to help us debug.

I have a recording, not clear how to attach it here. It's a Quicktime screen recording.

When I try a merge the preview window appears, I then click on Merge, LR seems to proceed as it used to (this used to work for me) but after it seems to complete there is no image available in the catalog. I can't find any new file wherever I look.

Any suggestions on how I can upload a Quicktime movie?

Alex,

We have made some changes to the queuing logic which would make this config changes unnecessary for version 7.1 onwards.
If you are already on version 7.1(or 7.2), you would not need to create the config file.

I'm using LR 6.1.10 though, not 7, and I would like to continue using LR 6. This used to work with this version of LR. Is there some way to get a fix so I can do panoramas again?

If you have this issue on 6.1? Or 6.10? Then it’s a slightly different issue, as this one started due to some change in 7.0. For a start, update to 6.14 which is the latest version, and then if you’re still seeing issues, post a thread and include the contents of Help menu > System Info and a bit more information about what happens when you try.

I have

6.1.10

According to the System Info (pasted below). I don't see how to update to 6.14, when I tried to update Adobe gave me a trial version of 7.2

The trial version has the same issue as far as I can tell.

How do I convince it to update to 6.14? Is 6.14 the same as 6.1.14?

Thanks

Matt,

In order to isolate the issue, can you follow the steps and let us know the result:
  • Create a new catalog
  • Copy the input files for panorama to a new folder
  • Import the images in the new catalog
  • Initiate panorama merge on the photos
  • After merge operation finishes, check if:
             - merged image is added to catalog
             - merged images gets created in the folder where input images are present

Thanks, I tried those steps and it worked, I now have a panorama created from the pictures I selected. It was added to the new catalog and a *-Pano.dng file is created in the new catalog folder.

I would like to be able to create a panorama though without going through these steps if possible. It's a bit of a hassle to do all this.

I just tried the above work around posted by Satish T, and it worked for me, just like the old days last week.  i copied the Lightroom 5.0 Registration.lrreg file and edited it in Notebook (windows PC) and pasted in the above Features.disableGlobalTaskManager = true.   Restart lightroom, see it show up in the system info and you should be good to go.

This just started happening to me -- the progress bar showed Creating HDR, without making any progress.  The "config.lua" workaround worked for me.

I had this problem with Panorama Merge as well.  Satish's config.lua method worked perfectly once I figured out what was meant 'create a config.lua file'.  Probably obvious to most but just in case anyone else is as uninformed as me -

Open Notepad
Paste in the line: Features.disableGlobalTaskManager = true
Save As config.lua onto your Desktop (or wherever), enter the entire C/Users..../Lightroom location from your Settings into the task bar search window* and open the appropriate folder and then copy and paste in the config.lua file you saved on your Desktop (or wherever).  If it has saved as config.lua.txt then rename the file by deleting .txt and save.  You might get a warning at that point but ignore it.

I am using Windows 10, btw.

*I had to do this as I could not find the location manually stepping through the folder tree indicated in my settings.  No idea why that should be.

Now, have I created more confusion for some of you?  I apologise if so.

I cant figure out how to do this rite my path is different from everyone else's

Application folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Lightroom Classic CC
Library Path: C:\Users\foxy\Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom Catalog.lrcat
Settings Folder: C:\Users\foxy\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom

and when I add the file in nothing happens

Jeremy,

The path for your system would be 'C:\Users\foxy\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\config.lua'.
In 7.1 version, we have made some changes to the queuing logic which would make this config changes unnecessary. So, you would not need any changes if you are on version 7.1.

With LR Classic 7.1, on MacOS 10.13.3 (High Sierra), I receive:
I did the bit with the config file but to no avail.

This error shows up if either the input image set is not valid HDR/Panorama set or any of the settings merge settings is incompatible for the images.

Try the following things to debug:
  • Check if the images and their type(not a mix of formats like JPG, DNG etc) are compatible
  • Tweak the settings for merge to remove any incompatible merge setting.

I, too, am having this issue. Have Macbook Pro, 16 GB. Just installed High Sierra 10.13.3.
Have Lightroom Classic CC 7.1

When I create a panorama, it successfully shows preview, then goes to 'creating panorama' mode and spits out this error:

Failed to import the final merged result from /Volumes/Seagate Backup Plus Drive/PHOTO-DB/CAMERA/2016/DEC 2016 - UTAH/IMG_4012-Pano.dng.

This is with as little as 2 pictures.

Do you think it could relate to an external hard drive that's not High Sierra compatible? Or something funky like that?

Off topic, not related to other merge issues observed on Lr Classic.

Please reference the new conversation here: Panorama image fails to import

I can't remember why this was flagged as off-topic, but figured I'd follow-up to say my issue was fixed. The cause was in fact caused by the hard drive not being high sierra compatible (requires re-formatting to fix) - I transferred my files to a new external hard drive, and was able to do panoramas and hdr merges.

I had successfully made a HDR hours before the problem started, as commented above, I also did not even restart the computer. Nothing theoretically has changed ... just the problem that really started.

What I've already tried:
I made the config.lua.
I made a new catalog with photos of a new folder.
I already used the shortcuts but the progress bar stays in the same place.
I already updated the lightroom, I did a general cleaning on the pc, until I allowed the application in Bitdefender, just for guarantee.
Anything.
I work with panoramic photography, 90% of my material is like this, I need a solution not to leave my clients at hand and I need it soon!

Just to prove that i did everything possible.
I'm that kind of guy who always leaves the pc clean and working perfectly. I formatted everything is less than 2 months and has no clear reason for the problem to happen.
Everything is working perfectly except for the damn photo merge.
I really do not have any alternatives to try to solve this problem.

I just downgrade to version 6.0 and managed to do the panning successfully.
I also got in touch by phone with Adobe that will ask me for the log I posted above.
But it's been 5 months since people are having this problem and the solution still does not seem to be definitive.
Dude ... we pay dearly for this ... I am extremely dissatisfied with Adobe because of that.

The only thing that worked for me was copying the files I wanted to merge into a new, fairly empty, library. Then the merge worked. Seems like a bug but not one anyone will fix.

The problem with these kinds of bugs is that you need to be able to reproduce them in order to fix them.

It might help if Adobe put the files into the right folders or set the correct path to the file.
The folders specified in my system info do not exist.

The system file specifies: /Users/Tom/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
There is no /Application Support/ folder.

My /Application Support/ folder is located at MacintoshHD/Library/Application Support/
But then there is no Lightroom folder

There definitely is an 'Application Support' folder in your user/Library folder as well, but the user/Library folder itself is often hidden. In the Finder, select the 'Go' menu while holding the shift key. Now your user/Library folder should be in the list, so you can open it by selecting it in the menu. Note that in older versions of MacOS and Sierra you need to hold down the OPTION key rather than the SHIFT key.

While in the Go menu, holding shift only changes one item and it has nothing to do with hidden folders. So I hit Google and figured out how to show hidden files.
Then I also hit google to figure out how to create the file.

System Info does not correctly display
Config.lua flags:
Features.disableGlobalTaskManager = true

But, merge to panorama now works.

I wasn't talking about hidden files. I was talking about how to unhide your user Library folder. A different way of doing that is to go to your home folder and then in the Finder choose 'Show View Options'. All the way at the bottom you can check the option to show the Library folder. In that folder you'll find that 'Application Support' folder. And in that folder you'll find the 'Adobe' folder and then the 'Lightroom' folder.

You weren't talking about hidden, you were talking about hidden?
Files and folders are both objects and they WERE both hidden.
Your shift Go advice was not correct but it clued me in to what I needed to do.
Thank you for the follow on advice.

You can hide files on an individual basis, or you can hide their containing folder. Even though the effect is the same, the ways to do it are not. I said Shift, or on older systems Option. That should work, unless Apple changed it once again in High Sierra: http://osxdaily.com/2016/12/12/show-u...

I installed latest Lightroom on my new MAcbook 2019 with 16GB RAM and after I click Merge, it hangs at 25%. I disabled graphic processor, and now it hangs at 50%. I can merge 2-4 photos. But when I am trying 8 or more. It never completes. Tried the config.lua setting, no help.

And my older 2009 Macbook would take hours, but would complete the Merge. The new one with all the horsepower does not complete even if I leave it overnight. There is no CPU or disk activity as well, so the Lightroom is really stuck.

it look like something changed how LR using Virtual memory in addition to using RAM on macos. From now on, LR can't use Virtual memory on disk as much as previously used to create panorama file.

did some tests. little panorama with 2 shots makes great because only RAM is used to proceed. When 3-5 shots used and RAM is not enough - panorama makes in delay in 1-2 hours and more. MacPro 2015 with SSD and enough free space. This is started after macos 10.14.6 update, before that there is no such problems for several dozens of different panoramas.

Hi Krishna,

Can you share a few details to help us troubleshoot this slowness:
- System Info from 'Help->System Info' menu option
- Image location: HDD, SSD or network share?
- Average size of each image

I too seem to have this problem after updating to 10.14.6
Any fix? I have already added the command to the config.lua:

Config.lua-Flags:
Features.disableGlobalTaskManager = true

Hi Edgar,

The latest supplemental update for 10.14.6 should fix the problem with photo merge operations.
Also, you can you remove the config flag 'Features.disableGlobalTaskManager = true' and check if your issue gets resolved?

Dear Satish,

thanks for your answer. As written by me below the supplemental update did indeed solve my problem. To test it I now also removed the 'Features.disableGlobalTaskManager = true' in the config.lua. Merging the panorama also works when this option is removed.
'Thanks for asking!
All the best

And you revisited your MAC system information, and checked for an additional update? This one the Supplemental update?
