I am using photoshop 20141014.r.257x64. If I select merge HDR Pro in Photoshop from Lightroom, photoshop comes up, does the merge and when it is complete i get an error message that photoshop needs to close before I have a chance to save the merged photo

Sounds like you're on Windows. Does the crash log state the faulting module? Does this happen with all your HDR brackets, or only with specific sets of files? If you try the same thing directly from Photoshop by selecting File>Automate>Merge to HDR... do you get the same error?

Have you tried restoring your prefs?

If you do restore your prefs, please save a copy of your existing prefs in case they turn out to be the culprit. Having the bad prefs can sometimes help us track down the issue.

Having the same problem recently. Happens not always but in most cases. Restoring preferences did not help.

its ps 2014 cc. running windows 7 and it happens with most brackets of images though not with all. Used to work before until about 2-3 weeks ago. When I tried again today it stopped working.

Is it possible to narrow down a set of files that consistently reproduces the problem?

Sure. These sets consist usually of 3 24MP-Files from a Sony A77 converted to DNG in Lightroom. If a set does not work it does not work at all times. Sets that work do so again if I repeat the process.

Could you post a sample set of images (either on Dropbox or Creative Cloud)?

Could you find a solution already to the problem with the help of the files?
