Lightroom: Maximize width when rotating in landscape orientation (custom aspect ratio)

Presently, rotation is a 3 step operation for me (when rotating a non-cropped image - custom aspect ratio):

1. Rotate
2. Readjust a left corner to maximize width.
3. Readjust a right corner to maximize width.

I'd love if rotation algorithm would handle #2 & #3 for me - kinda like the "constrain to warp" option, except purpose being to maximize width.

Same principle could apply to portrait orientation, but its only an issue for me when rotating in landscape mode.

Maybe a keyboard modifier, used both when rotating and when changing the aspect ratio. With the keyboard modifier, the new crop would always be maximized.

So would you want it to keep the same custom ratio too, or enlarge the crop to keep all available pixels?

There are occasions when I've cropped a photo smaller, rotated it, and then wanted to reset the crop without resetting the rotation.

I'd imagined a button near the reset crop, so perhaps it could have a modifier toggle to switch between maximizing retained pixels with rotation and maximizing at the custom ratio - or perhaps it would automatically keep the custom ratio if it was locked.

I would want the latter: enlarge crop to keep all available pixels - OK if aspect ratio changes.

Now that you mention it, I think I see why it is the way it is: aspect ratio is being maintained upon rotation - whether locked or unlocked. Perhaps it could be as simple as maximizing width if ratio is unlocked.

PS - I like your idea about being able to reset the crop without resetting rotation.

Anyway, I think I could get used to the UI however it was done...

I would want it to keep the same custom ratio.

Right now, as you rotate (whether it's by hitting X or using the rotate slider) the crop size is retained, unless it is constrained by the edges of the frame, in which case it gets smaller.

My variation on Rob's proposal is that if you rotate using a keyboard modifier, it should try to maximize the frame size rather than trying to keep the same size.

This should be affected by the aspect ratio lock as appropriate -- if locked, the aspect ratio remains the same. If unlocked, the aspect ratio can change to maximize frame area.

I'd love to be able to reset a crop with resetting the orientation.. neat idea!

You could use the Alt/Option modifier to drag out from the centre, removing the need for one of those steps.
