Elements 13: Max. size of catalog reached?

I've been working with PSE since the very beginning and upgraded from earliest versions to 6, then 9 and now 13.1.1.
Since a month I cannot use the face recognition anymore on new images. Neither does the auto-analyzer work. The small violet tag in the right hand lower corner first says "searching for unanalyzed media...", then it says "Auto-Analyzer is busy....", then shows completed. When I click on the "Mark Face" button a warning message appears with the text: "People Analysis is yet to be performed on the selected media. would you like to start now?" Then the program starts analyzing but becomes unresponsive and Windows offers to wait or to close the program. Sometimes the responsivness returnes and I can cancel the operation and continue working inside PSE.
Details:
  • PSE13.1.1 running on a Windows 10, v.1709 (fall creators update) -  64bit.
  • OS is on a 500GB SSD and 16GB Ram is installed.
  • Catalog has almost 48k images and videoclips
  • BreezeData Folder has exactly 100.001 files (100.000 breeze files and 1 BreezeSession.dat file) , File breeze-99999.xml is the latest file written last month when the problem started.
  • CAXMPFiles Folder has almost 68k files.

FYI:
  1. Repairing and optimizing the catalog has no effect.
  2. When I create a new catalog and import a few files, the face recognition works without problems!
  3. I have renamed the BreezeSession.dat file to BreezeSession.dat.old as has been suggested here before. A new BreezeSession.dat file has been created, but did not solve the problem.
  4. Images imported before the problem started are tagged correctly or can be tagged with the "Mark Face" button or are already recognized and await affirmation or entry of name.
Questions:
  • Did I just reach the max. breeze number of files?
  • Why are there 100k Breeze files while my catalog is only 48k images (including thousands of video files...)?
  • How can I recover from this situation?

Deleting all the files in the BreezeData folder will most certainly delete some 6 years of tagging faces in my images.
Not an option I want to think about.

Jack, maybe it's imprudent on my part to answer here, since I don't want to use face recognition...
However, I have read many reports of similar failures  when using the FR features in older Elements versions.
It's a well-known fact that face recognition is the main factor for slowness in using catalogs, especially in the first indexing stage, but there may have been a real size limitation on the number of possible entries in the catalog.
Comparing the internal structure of catalogs and its databases components (there are several), it seems that the recent implementations are more apt to deal with any number of face recognition files.
Maybe install the trial version of the current Elements 2018 and convert your catalog (the present one will renamed with a -1 suffix and will continue to work with your version 13).

It's normal that you have much more than your true picture files in the catalog. That includes sidecar xmp files, xml files and face recognition icons...
Without face recognition, there are users with catalogs containg 200 000 pure image files.

BreezeData Folder has exactly 100.001 files (100.000 breeze files and 1 BreezeSession.dat file) , File breeze-99999 is the latest file written last month when the problem started.
Maybe that is the limit? I think that the recent versions of the catalog do use an sqlite database like the thumbnail cache one to store an unlimited number of files... Just a guess on my part.

Thanks Michel for your time and thoughts.
I like the face recognition feature, but can live without it if that's what it takes.
I'll disable the FR feature and see how that works.
I've tried the 2018 (PSE16) but removed it due to several bugs amongst it FR....
Maybe I should give it another try....

Because I still prefer to work with FR, I tried something new. I renamed the  BreezeData Folder and PSE13 created a new BreezeData Folder keeping all existing tags in place! Now the FR works again as "new".....
So if someone reaches the apparently maximum amount of BreezeData files (100.000), just rename the Folder to something else and a new, empty folder will be created that fills up with new breeze .xml files, keeping the functionality of face recognition in tact......

After a few weeks I can report that PSE13 recognizes (new) faces in images and the tagging works as intended. Only one problem popped up: when adding manually a face tag, the program crashes. However, when starting the program and navigating to this image, the face tag is in place....
A nuisance, but one can live with it especially when using a SSD for OS and data, the whole process takes less than 30 seconds!
