Mask relationships-two masks one of the foreground one of the background, they have an inverse relationship, so that editing one mask automatically changes the other. It would also be great to be able to define what kind of relationship the masks have, direct or inverse.

I'm not following your question or idea. Are you saying that you want the masks to reside on two different layers or the same layer?

These masks would be on separate groups or layers. Most likely groups

Kind of like this. So if I could define a relationship between these two masks then if I altered the foreground mask then the background mask would automatically update so that I don't have to replace it and invert it again.

This would work well especially paired with a function to link masks and then chose a relationship like same or inverse or what not.
