Photoshop: Make the crop tool and the marquee tool have a baby.

Share functionality between the crop tool and the marquee tool. For instance why can't we edit a selection made with the Marquee tool by it's corners, like we can with crop? And why can't we choose to crop to a ratio with the crop tool instead of having to marquee, hoping we get the right positioning on the first try, then select "crop"? From what I can see, they're basically the same tool -- the crop tool essentially makes a marquee selection for a crop.

You can choose Select>Transform Selection... to edit/transform a selection.

Yes, but why are the extra clicks necessary? Can't a selection just have corner anchors automatically?

It gets complicated. Crop is a modal operation, as is transform, as is Transform Selection. We'd have to make the handles non-modal. That could/would collide with "Show Transform Handles" for the layer move tool.

And the marquee/selection tools are designed to work with odd shaped selections (because they can add to, subtract from, intersect with, etc.).

And if the marquee tool would always have transform handles, in some cases you might drag a handle instead of just making a new selection
