Add CMD-C == copy the entire image/layer when there is no active selection.
Add CMD-V == paste as new image.

(CTRL for windows version)

Many have asked for this as it is the intuitive behavior found in many other image editing software. It is needlessly tedious to have to select the entire image, copy it, create a new document, select it, and then paste. I am coming from Paint Shop Pro and this is the one feature that I am missing.

Unfortunately that leads to ambiguity in what you are targeting (pixels, layer, whole image, whole document, some text field, etc.) for both the copy and the paste.

If no image is open, then "paste clipboard to new image" might make sense.
But if an image is open, then the paste is ambiguous (paste into image, paste as new image, paste as layer, etc.) and would require additional UI to ask what you intended to do.
