Photoshop: Macro Layers to Keys

I was thinking if Adobe was to add a layer tab for 10 preset layers that would be shortcut to the numpad or other macro keys. In other words you would drag a layer to a shortcut to quickly select it by pressing the shortcut key. I personally believe that this could increase workflow and productivity.

Comment with any ideas you get or if you do not agree with me! I think this feature would be useful not only in Photoshop but applications like after effects where it would be nice to have a quick way to select a layer rather than fumbling about the interface.

Why not just record an action and assign a Function Key as a shortcut to the action?

This would work as long as your layer names stayed exactly the same... So you'd have to re-record the action for any new/different layer names. Great idea for templated workflows though!

You might also be interested in Layer Isolation Mode if you want a workaround while you wait for new features:

Isolating only a few layers in the panel and using the alt-[, alt-] hotkeys to select up/down in the layers panel is an almost-there option.
