Lightroom 5.3 does not send DNG to Photoshop

I run Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5.3 on an iMac (i5, 32GB RAM) with OS X Mavericks. When I choose a DNG file in my LR catalogue (or the develop module) and send it over to Photoshop, nothing happens.

Photoshop does start (if not already open) and sometimes shows a little "swirl" icon showing it's busy, but it does not open the DNG. Today it sometimes opened a DNG, but without any changes I've made in LR. Also there is no panel asking if I want to open the original or a copy.

If I use the "open in another application" command in LR and force Lightroom to create a TIFF file, I can open this TIFF from within LR without any problem.

Out of curiosity, if you double-click on the DNG in the Finder (so that it tries to open in PS CC) does it open in Camera Raw correctly (should be ACR version 8.3)?
