LR continuously refreshes the image in develop mode

This problem has existed in LR since about 3.0.
If Lightroom creates a tiff or psd for external edit, then when it is returned to LR and one attempts to further adjust the image, the adjustment sliders gray out, the photo reloads, then the sliders become active again.
Many folks say it is caused by the program writing to XMP, to turn "automatically write to XMP" off. Does NOT work!
Bampton says to flick to the next photo. Does NOT work.
What will work to stop the activity is to close and reopen the program. This is not normal behavior.
This will not occur if the file(tiff or PSD) is written by Photoshop. If you are using 4.X and CS6 then Photoshop will write the file at the end of your session in PS.
If you are using 3.X and CS5 together you will not experience the problem since again PS writes the file.

The problem is ONLY with tiffs or PSD files created by LR for external editing. It would seem to me this is a bug.

I have seen this too with mismatching ACR versions.

I am having the exact same issue. I originally thought that because my catalog was set to optimize every time it is closed that is why the new previews (with the filters applied) came back fine when I reopened the catalog. But you're right. It is something about opening and closing the catalog that fixes the images. This is easy to replicate...I open any raw canon image into Color Efex NIK, add a few filters and Save. Then LR goes nuts when I try to edit that image any more until I shut down the catalog and reopen.
My catalog has lots of raw images and was on an EHD. Win 7 64 bit, 16 GB RAM
Another catalog on Mac HD (not EHD) , 4GB RAM did same thing.
A third catalog on the HD of same above PC has only 2 images total. It did not have the problem with either the one jpeg nor the raw image in that small catalog.

So I hope some smart LR guru can help here - is is an External Editor setting? I did try playing with some of the settings?
Is it a memory issue and will only happen to catalogs with lots of large raw images?
Other ideas??

Here was my post earlier today - in case anyone else having the problem has an idea or Adobe LR gurus stop by and enlighten us.

I think they're 2 slightly different bugs. There's one that Rich mentions, which is specifically related to Photoshop and mismatched ACR versions, and there's the XMP bug that happens with other software and can be worked around by turning off auto-write or switching images. Similar result with slightly different causes. Both bugs!

I am posting this as an update.

It would appear that the Adoe folks have addressed this problem.

In the 5beta a tiff returning from an externl editor will blnk once with the "Loading"

visible then remain stable with no more "blinkies'.

If it remains this way into the final, I am posting a great big

THANK YOU!!!!!
