LR 5.1RC. Cannot add Sub-Keywords to a Main-Keyword by using the ">" symbol.

I want to add the Sub-Keyword Butterfly to the existing Main-Keyword Insects. In the Keywording-pane I enterthe text: Butterfly>Insects. However after hitting the enter key the text in the Keywording-pane changes to: Insects < Butterfly. Which is not correct (please note that the words are in the opposite order and that the greater-than symbol has changed into a smaller-than symbol).

When looking into the Keyword List pane I notice that a new Main-Keyword with a new Sub-Keyword has been created namely Butterfly (as Main) and Insects (as Sub). The existing original Keyword Insects doesn’t contain the Sub-Keyword Butterfly as intended.

Use the [ | ] character instead (Shift [ \ ])

Thanks Rikk Flohr, but I don't see the connection! The only caracter one may use for this particular purpose is the greater-than caracter.
Please explain

That's it!

Thanks a lot for your help Rikk though I still don't understand why all in a sudden we have to use an | in stead of the > sign. In LR 4.4 it was still the greater-than caracter we had to use for this purpose.
How did you find out about this change by the way?

Thanks again.

Very interesting. LR 5 changed the meaning of “>”.

In LR 4, you enter a parent/child keyword as Child>Parent or Parent|Child.

But in LR 5, you enter a parent/child keyword as Child<Parent, Parent>Child, or Parent|Child. (*)

I have a small preference for the LR 5 syntax, since that is commonly used in other contexts. For example, in Adobe documentation, menu commands are documented as Parent > Child, e.g. File > Print.

But I’m pretty surprised that Adobe made such a change to an existing UI and then didn’t document it.

(*) When reading keywords from imported image metadata, LR has long recognized the vertical bar “|” as the hierarchical separator.

Kost has a 7/19 blog post about this, alluding (but not explicitly saying) that the behavior changed in LR 5:

That explains a lot.

I've searched for hours and hours but I couldn't find the answer to my problem. But now it's solved thanks to you both.

Bye for now.
