LR 3.4.1 will lockup and freeze when using clone/heal brush (and slow performance)

This problem has been affecting LR 3 as long as I can remember and I've finally had enough - LR is completely unusable right now. Typically I'd go through my batch of images (~500 or so, always in it's own catalog) and do basic touchups with clone/heal brush then noticed LR become very slow to respond - either after many adjustments on a single image or throughout a catalog. Now as soon as I open LR, click the clone/heal brush on an JPG in LR 3.3 and 3.4.1, and move the adjust a few pixels - LR will immediately lock up and freeze - and I need to kill it from the Task Manager. Every time. I've deleted my recycle bin, catalog "Previews.lrdata", and purged the Cache to no avail.

Running LR 3.4.1 on Win 7 64bit, Intel i7 960 4x3.2ghz, 16gb RAM, dual monitor, nothing else running (except task manager and explorer windows, even disabled Norton) editing JPGs from Canon Rebel XTi. Since the performance was "sluggish" during prior LR versions I built an entirely new system - yet this problem still exists!

I am not the only one with this issue... but I don't understand why everyone doesn't have this issue?! How can or Professional Photographer use even LR?

Hi Brian,

Are you by any chance using a tablet for input? (As in Wacom tablet, not an iPad.)

If you throw out your preferences file, and start with a new catalog, do you have the same problem? I can provide instructions on how to try both of those things, if need be.

Thanks,
Ben

Nope, no tablet usage.

EDIT: Ok, I'm now following this thread here in hopes of a resolution:

I'm having the same problem....in 3.5. After one or two apps of spot removal, LR freezes up necessitating a trip to Task Manager, shutting down and then starting up LR again....where the freeze up again occurs on another attempt with the SR. What am I to do other than making a trip to PSE? I find it difficult to believe that Adobe has not yet corrected this problem as many have had this complain (see comments in LR Forum and other sites). I use W 7, 64 bits.
