Is this LR 5.4 Final or some earlier version? Windows or Mac?

Are the ratings originating in LR or are the added by some other program, either prior to or after the Import? Is the rating program something from Adobe or an outside entity?

And for Export, presumably you have All Metadata included as your Metadata setting on the Export panel?

It is lr5.4 final, updated to last version, it is windows, ratings originated in LR, after the import, before the export, as you can see in the printscreen All metadata is included on the export panel. Had worked for years with LR2, LR3, LR4.
I would like to receive prompt direct support from Adobe but can not find where. That is a real problem originated in LR5.4, the problem is that LR5.4 cats can not be opened in LR4 and turn off LR5 until fix. And now I have lot of pictures to rework and in a hurry with deadlines with my customers.

There is no print-screen included in your messages in this thread. If you have posted another threads on the same subject it would be useful to include them as links, here. Otherwise, you should be able to attach pictures using the button at the bottom right of the reply text area.

I asked about version and platform in case someone recognized it as a reported but in a particular version. What about versions of LR5 prior to 5.4? Is 5.4 the first version of 5 you've tried?

Is this in a LR4-catalog upgraded to LR5 or a new LR5-created catalog? Does it matter if you start with a brand new LR5-created catalog and import one photo, rate it, and export it? If a single-image new-catalog doesn't work, then can you provide that catalog and image via www.dropbox.com?

What are you using to view the ratings, LR5 or some outside viewer?

there are 2 print screen in the top, previous answer to other member. This happens in all my lr5 created catalogs. I will try to send some sample if I had time not sure that today.
But at this time i am in a hurry working hundreds of pictures, and reworking rating.
When the export is small *one picture or some few pictures it seems to work fine. I could not say how many pictures is the threshold to lost rating.

I don't know what other message I should be looking at for your print-screens. Clicking into your user profile shows you've only participated in two threads, this one, as the originator and where I see no embedded images, and another one about Windows Workgroup and firewalls 6 years ago, which seems unlikely to be relevant to LR 5.4. If you are posting threads with multiple identities or on different forums then give some hint about by whom or where to look.

UPDATE: you seem to have included answers to the above while I was writing this reply. To include a link to another discussion you go to that discussion in a browser then copy/paste the URL from your browser's address bar into a reply, here.

For the record, my LR 5.4 exports star ratings to JPGs ok for recent pictures I've imported and exported in 5.4. I can see these ratings in Windows Explorer:

I see you now say it happens with large export batches but not small ones, or at least is somehow intermittent. The is probably going to be harder to create a reproducible scenario that Adobe can look at and determine a cause for, which is what they'd need to debug it, which is why I was asking for a catalog and images.

A long-shot would be to delete your preferences file in case something is haywire in there. You might want to review what you've set so you can redo important settings after deleting preferences.

In case this problem is reported by someone else, where is your catalog and where are your master photos and your exported photos: an internal drive, external drive, USB/network-connected drive, RAID, NAS, etc, and what brands of virus scanners, and other things that affect file writing do you have. The amount of memory and computer might also matter if the problem is related to resources running out during a large export.

One thing that could be important, is whether the problem is tied to particular photos--if you export again are the same photos missing ratings or not, or do which photos that are missing ratings change even if you repeat the same export, or if you break up an export into smaller exports.

One thing I'm confused about is in your initial post in this thread you talk about Importing. What does that have to do with missing ratings on export? Do you mean you're reimporting your exports into LR and that's where the ratings are missing? If so, are the ratings also missing if you view the photos on online galleries (that show such ratings) or via Windows Explorer or other photo-viewing program? In other words are the ratings there but LR cannot see them when the photos are re-imported?

What type of Export file are we talking about, "export as original" or JPGs or TIFs or what?

There are a lot of questions thanks, I have all the answers if it can help.
quickly answers, will try your way after i finish my batch tonight and if i forgot to answer some.

no think i did not post in two discussions.
external drive,Seagate on usb port, or internal disk. Happens in both.
Mcfee usually disabled when working in my own photos to avoid troubles,
Windows 7 premium, intel core i3, 8gb, 64 bit, PS6, LR5,4,

NO it is not linked to a particular set of photos, it happens with every cat,
Yes I import the photos to other cat. I have big catalogs one for each customer. and when customer make final selection, I have a new one smaller CAT with the selection of all customers , lets say a compact final catalog. This i use for prints, books etc without the huge amount of pictures I wont need.

Import only add the exported selected photos that are in external some tiem or usually in internal, to the compact catalog This workflow works great for me. I used that for years with LR4, etc, without any problem.

but rating are missing for ever, In the original cat in the export (not in the original files that keeps the rating) , in the explorer, in the photo viewer. it seems they are exported without the rating. When I import the photos to a new cat, the rating is missing. When I see the photos in the originator cat rating is missing. When i see the photos in explorer, etc rating is missing.

I had not worked re exporting in small batchs. I will.

The rating is not there in the final export. It keeps in the original. We are talking in raw as original, and raw to jpg exports, and psd to jpg, and jpg to jpg resize.

All other programs shut down. except PS sometimes. It happens exporting to same disk same directory, or from one disk to other.
When I export and then import to another cat I miss the rating too(of course, there are not rating)..
There is not other way, I found then i miss rating in the export.
Again thanks.

Regarding the preference file, it will be better to make a backup. There are a lot of work done in presets.

Making a backup of the preferences file (or just renaming with a different extension) before deleting it would be advisable, yes.

This would be an experiment to see if it makes any difference: just before doing a large Export, shut down LR, delete/rename the preferences file so LR has to create a new, default one, then restart LR and do your Export. Then check to see if any ratings are missing. If you are using Export presets to handle things, then maybe try doing a standard export without using an Export preset to see if things are ok, then.

If ratings are still missing, then the preferences reset has nothing to do with the problem so rename/restore back the old preferences file.

If ratings are intact, then put back some of the non-default settings by hand, and see if things are still ok. If ratings continue to show up ok no matter even if you put all the preferences values back to how they were--by hand via LR menus, then there was probably something corrupted in the preferences that was affecting things.

So you export JPGs of your and their picks and these JPGs do not include the original's ratings, at least sometimes when the batches are big, and this lack of ratings is visible both in Windows Explorer and any new LR catalog they might be imported into--where the importing and viewing in LR is probably irrelevant to the lack of ratings since the ratings are not there if you check in Windows Explorer, it's just where you see the lack of ratings, since that is the next step in the workflow where the ratings would be visible.

Or do you mean that you export a new catalog, directly from LR with a subset of images selected, and perhaps "Include "Digital Negatives" (copies of the originals) to a new destination, and these copies of the originals or the exported catalog no longer have ratings?

I think the answer is that the first scenario is what you do, but I'm just trying to confirm by repeating what I think I understand.

you got it. First scenario. Never tried second. Yes importing is irrelevant, but it was where i identified the problem. Because I need this ratings in my workflow last cat. and now there are not ratings.

The next time you have missing ratings on an Export, export a catalog of that set of photos, and try the same export from that smaller catalog and see if the ratings are missing. If so, then you have a test catalog, along with the images that it references, as the basis for a repeatable scenario.

Initially just export the catalog without including any previews or Digital Negatives (originals) so the export is fast and the catalog points to the existing originals.

If you find you still have issues with the export using this smaller catalog, then do the export of the catalog that includes the digital negatives so you'll have original files to send to Adobe if they want.

Just to clarify one small point - we are talking about star ratings, rather than flags, correct?

o yes. flags are not exported. If i want to export flags I would filter flag pictures, and use the word flag in the keywords to export. This way i can "flag" them again in the new catalog or make a collection with the keyword. That is why I only use the flag for reject, and delete rejected photos. if you pass your mouse over the stars you can read "set rating". That is why I call the stars "rating".

Great, I thought it sounded that way, but figured it was worth ruling out to be on the safe side.

That is going more trouble. If i want to change the color label in one photo, and try to use the menu in the library downside, click the new color ant it makes nothing. NOthing, nothing.

Only way to change the color is going to the photo and left click to select a new color. If I select more than one photo and try to use the menu on the bottom of the library, in the thumbnails view, and want to change label color, nothing happen when click the new color.!! urrrgg Again only way to change is going to one photo left click color to pop up the menu, and select the new color.

Any solution to this problem? I'm having the same trouble. Toshiba A505 laptop, Lightroom 4, Windows 7 64-bit, Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 2.10 GHz. A single original image is .jpeg. Exporting to Windows share on a desktop system. Star rating created in Lightroom is not visible in Windows Explorer. When I imported the JPEG file back into the same catalog with a new name, I see that the rating appear again in Lightoom.

Alan and Debra,

If the rating shows up for the pic imported back into LR, that suggests that problem is with your particular Windows configuration. Some troubleshooting:

1. In Windows Explorer, right-click the exported pic, select Properties, and then click the Details tab. Please post a screen shot of the Details tab.

2. Upload the exported photo to Dropbox or similar and post the link here. That will let us see if the rating is indeed in the photo.

Update: Deleted my preference file and exported again. Star rating still doesn't show in Explorer. When I opened the file in Photoshop Elements 12, it shows the correct star rating in the File Info Rating field in the General tab, (not in the IPTC or IPTC Extension tabs). In what part of a file are star ratings placed?

Update: I deleted my preference file and it didn't make a difference. However, when I opened the exported file in Photoshop Element 12, the star rating showed correctly in the File Info window, General tab (not the IPTC or IPTC extension tabs). How are star ratings captured in Windows files?
