Lightroom: Quick focus preview (1:1 sluggish)

When going through large sets of portraits, I want to be able to make a quick edit for focus, deleting (or flagging) the out-of-focus images. Lightroom has always been painfully slow when viewing at 1:1, and for my purposes, seeing the entire screen area redrawn at 1:1 is unnecessary when I only need to see if the eye is in focus.

There are few things I liked about Aperture more than Lightroom, but their localized 'loupe' to see the focus in just a selected part of the image was very, very efficient when reviewing large sets of images. Lightroom really needs something like this, as even since upgrading to a MacPro 5,1 with 24GB of ram with an SSD for the catalog and preview files, Lightroom is still quite slow to show 1:1 views, even when 1:1 previews are still fresh (often takes 3-5 seconds).

This impacts my workflow tremendously on a day-to-day basis, and I've been crossing fingers since LR 2 that it gets a fix.

Don't forget to vote if you agree...

Have you computed 1:1 previews before doing your review, and are you in Library when doing your review?

Is your camera-raw cache on your SSD, too?

I don't know if it's any faster, but Bridge has a small Loupe view that zooms an aera to 1:1 even though the rest of the image is full-image-preview size.

3-5 seconds when 1:1 previews are fresh is abnormally long. it's a small fraction of a second for me. I wonder if there is something about your system that is not playing nice with Lr - dunno what it could be. graphics driver springs to mind, but it's a shot in the dark. If 1:1 previews are NOT fresh, then it's more like the 3-5 seconds for me too, so maybe the problem is that Lr thinks it needs to rebuild 1:1 previews all the time. Have you tried deleting previews (.lrdata folder in with catalog)? Preferences are notorious for causing strange problems too, consider setting them aside as a test if you haven't already (.agprefs file in with presets). Do you have the same problem even with a new test catalog, with only say a half-dozen images in it?

If you request 1:1 previews be built twice in a row, does it build them both times, or does it say "all are up to date" after the first time? You may need to click the 'Reset All Warning Dialogs' button in Lr preferences to have such a message displayed.
