Similar behaviour to freeware programs such as Geosetter and others - when geotagging a photo it searches geonames.org, google or other providers and automatically fills in the IPTC metadata for City,Sublocation,Country,ISO country. Currently it puts the lat/long in but leave the rest blank.
Also add altitude via google earth or other API if its missing (from example a manual tag as opposed to a track read).

Based on the release notes, the first point is a limitation of the beta version.

What about doing it from photos taken at the same location : avoids asking a server and works faster. Also less prone to errors (i often find geoname to indicate useless or wrong sub-location)

Geosetter freeware has behaviour similar to this where you can set a "favourite" location and a radius. It can then auto tag the IPTC data for any photos tagged within that radius locally without needing external access. It works very well.

I find that this feature is implemented in 4.0. Nice!
However, I am a bit unhappy about the following and wondering if there is a workaround or something:

Sometimes I am not happy with the Location information that Lightroom fills in based on the GPS data so I want to edit, say, the sublocation. But if I do that, then Lightroom sulkingly takes away all the Location information, i.e. also the city, region, and country, even though that was perfectly fine.

It does that even when it originally did not fill in a particular field (e.g. city or sublocation) and I fill that in manually.

Here is an example these coordinates: 57°37'55" N 11°36'5" E. If you tag an image at this location, Lightroom (or rather: Google Maps) will give you "Öckerö" as a sublocation (don't ask me why - Öckerö is here: 57°42'44" N 11°38'55" E). The correct sublocation would be "Vinga" (It even says so on the map). But when I change Öckerö to Vinga, I need to manually add also the city etc.

This is a bit annoying and I'm wondering if this is a kind of bug or if I'm doing something wrong...

I have the same, and yes, this is really annoying. I guess the logic behind was "if one wants to add own data, auto-tagged data is not valid anymore", but this assumption is wrong, especially if you simply want to add sublocation field and leave all the other fields derived from GPS coordinates.
