Lightroom: Edit In External Editor does not work/function

I can not send images from LR4 to any external editor via Photo>Edit In. My system is Mac OS 10.7.3. Using the Edit In command fails to open the external editor and no error message results. This occurs whether the images have the 2012 Process Version applied or not. My external editors are primarily PSE10 and Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.0. This is an important part of my workflow.

I have reinstalled PSE10 and updated to the newest version of Silver Efex Pro.

Unfortunately, you are correct just having Elements 10 installed does NOT solve the problem! I had to go through the long and tedious CS5 download to get the workflow back! I think Adobe should allow us to activate that download since it was forced on us by their incompetence!

To add to my frustration I bought LR3 late Jan and was going to wait. Because I bought it when I did to start getting familiar with it I had to pay to upgrade to 4 by the same of a week.

I can understand that Adobe could not test LR4 on all platforms, hardware, and with 3rd party apps and issues are going to happen. But not working with their own software especially for something as common as launching another editor sort of baffles me. But there are also bigger things in life to worry about so I'll get over it. But I would like to see a solution soon. I don't like to install things are don't want or even trial versions because there are ussually issues (performance and OS errors) that I try to avoid.

System MAC OS 10.7

I have a Mac, using Snow Leopard. Just purchased Lightroom 4 and the external editing does not function. No error message. Just nothing. In Lightroom 3, I had no problems. Adobe said they are working on fixing this. Does anyone with a Mac have a more immediate solution other than tearing my hair out.

Been running cs5 and LR 3 with no problems
Upgraded to LR4 now if I try to edit in PS it says I need raw 7.0
if i ignore and open in PS - PS hangs
If I use LR option it Automatically creates a tiff file
When I save as, It creates a third file.
Imaging doing this for 100- 22MB files
Tried raw 6.7 beta no change

why not just give us our money back as payment for beta testing your product. Obviously it was not ready for production use.
Support is useless.
Right now LR is painfully slow. Extra files take up too much disk space. Which I then have to take time to go back and delete.
Awkward to do further editing in PS.

My only option is to uninstall it and reinstall the previous version.
Love paying for a product that I cannot use.

Running Windows 7 and I've got this problem too.

I implemented the registry 'fix' JustMe06 suggested way above and I can now use Nik plugins with no issues.

Great Job JustMe06!!!!

I am reluctant to use a beta for production work. My deliverables have a very short turnaround and I cannot afford to take the chance. I thought with LR that once it was out of beta I would be OK. Boy was I wrong.

Unfortunately...
I"m very disappointed from Adobe this time - the guy above is right - we should get our money back, since now we actually do the testing of the LR4 BETA.
In regards of PS CS6 beta, I also don't use it for serious work, since there are few changes and I may feel confused for a moment which one is where (which I can't afford).
But every time I have a spare minute I like to play with it and learn it's new features. If someone is like me, then this is pretty good solution to have all your Nik's plugins working again.

This is not only not working to PhotoShop, I use the fuction to transfer pics to Portrait Professional and I get the same error. So for me downloading a trial of Photoshop would not solve it.

For now I need to export manually, open, edit, re-import - time consuming!

Hope this is solved in a service pack to LR 4 soon.

Hi Nicolai,

Downloading the trial of Photoshop will allow you to send images to third party external editors, not just Photoshop. Give it a try.

Not only is the external edit function inoperative, LR4 is many times slower and totally unusable for image processing even on an iMac 27! Worse, the refunds department call back system had me on line for nearly an hour waiting and never picked up. Who ever beta tested this was not a photographer and this means an entire marketplace of photographers will think twice before buying another Adobe upgrade. Classic case of shareholder profit motive overtaking customer satisfaction. So, when the refund department awakes from its 1000 year sleep, I'd like a refund please. Thanks Adobe!

Some people complain about performance.
My 2 cents.

After I finally got 1 plugin working (NIKs Color Efex 4) I tried to do some small edits on a TIFF file, generated with Color Efex 4.

The screen started to flash after every small increment of almost all the slides. It is as if the TIFF files are a bit to big for Lightroom4.
No problems to do these kind of things in Aperture.
I'm scared that after I get my other TIFF-based plugins working Lightroom4 will indeed be to sluggish to do anything with TIFF files.

Anybody else with experiences with big TIFF files and Lightroom4?

My smallest files are 22MB. LR4 seems real slow compared to LR3.
Right now is is too unreliable for me to use.

Is there a fix yet for the edit in feature of LR4? I just purchase photoshop elements premeire 10 and do not think I understand that i need to download CS5 trial for now. I have already loaded that 30 day trial when I decided to spend less money. So what am i to do in the meantime? This software was not cheap.

Say it ain't so Adobe, almost three weeks later and still no real response from you. We, your adoring fans, call you, text you, e-mail you. Yet, here we sit praying for the phones to ring, the texts to be replied to, and the e-mail responses to pop up on our computer screens telling us that you have an answer for us, telling us you were busy, but thought of us every day.

Adobe, we've been together for a long time. We like you. You like us. And that's why we stay. Geez, we recently reaffirmed our relationship by bringing Lightroom 4 into our house. It was a match made in heaven, but then you stopped talking to us. We thought it was us. But in speaking with each other we found that it's not us, it's you. You probably needed some space. We were likely making too many demands. Tell you what, since it's coming up on our three week anniversary, why don't we promise to work together: you promise we can celebrate by being using Lightroom 4 without issue. We stop bothering you. Can we do that Adobe?

I recommend that every one having issues:
1) go to Google.
2) Find every site that has a review of LR 4
#) post your problems and a recommendation that no one purchase it until the bugs are worked out.

Perhaps this will get their attention!

I get - and appreciate - that Adobe is trying to find a fix, but beyond this site, I've not seen anything on the Adobe home page warning people about this issue, among other issues.

I think there is a duty on Adobe's part to warn people more widely of this problem, not necessarily to dissuade them from the purchase, but to properly inform them that for those intending to use it that updates to emerging issues will be forthcoming.

A simple caveat: If I use Lightroom, but do not use third party plug ins, then okay this may not be so much an issue for me. But if I use Lightroom and third party plugs in, then I'm forewarned and know what I'm getting myself into.

This will minimize complains to Adobe and minimize frustration by uses. It shows you're on top of your game and respect your customers. It's an software product, we get that there will be issues, we don't necessarily like it, but we get it.

I'm concerned about people who may purchase this product without being aware of this forum. These same people could end up following installation advice, some wrong, some perhaps in the wrong hands worrisome, that may cause more problems with their operating systems / computer programs than just Adobe not working properly.

I've just discovered this, due to my own stupidity I guess of not checking known bugs before upgrading.

Frankly this is an astonishing bug to make it into production, since the product already had a decent beta phase. It's not like it affects one particular external editor - it's everything; in my case Tiffen DFX, corel paintshop pro, all the topaz plugins etc.

This is truly disastrous for people's workflow with critical projects to deliver - I'm sure one can figure out some clunky workaround, launching standalone external editors (if they exist for your plugins) - but for some people they'll be stuck, aside from the whole "download CS5" 'fix', which I don't intend to do.

I doubt I will ever upgrade to a new Adobe S/W version again until its 6 months old. Totally lost confidence as this has killed my workflow..

I found that I processed my picture (aligned, sharpened, toned, etc) and when I launched another application, even though LR asked if I wanted to use a copy with LR settings, it deleted all the work I had done

It sure would be nice if someone would give us an update.......If I would have known there was an issue I would have bought Lightroom 3 instead.....Maybe this is an option for folks that just purchase LR4 and had no other version.

I remember hearing that people who bought LR3 a month before the release of LR4 did not have to pay for the upgrade. Maybe Adobe would be willing to change it for you. However, once they fix the problem, LR4 will have more features, i.e. being able to e mail images directly.

Folks. If you are on windows you don't even have to install anything. There is a registry edit you can do (someone even created a file to do it in one click) that adds the registry entries that installing photoshop does, and it's these that are important.

Go over to the adobe forums and search for Lightroom 4 NIK plugins editing problem and you'll find the thread. It works for any plugins and external programs. I did it today and it fixed it for topaz, Tiffen, Corel, photomatix etc..

I bought 5 days ago LR4 + Nik Color Effex Pro 4 (two new boxes and many Euro/$ !!! ).
I upgraded to Color Effex 4002 just yesterday (update contemplates LR4) but it's impossible to send images from LR4 to Color Effex Pro 4 via Photo>Edit In; it doesn't work and no message results. (Using the Edit In command fails to open the external editor and no error message results) .
My system is Mac OS 10.6.8. Apple iMac 12.1.
I install twice LR4 and twice Color Effex Pro 4 (with upgrade 4002), same result = no!!
I"m very disappointed from Adobe this time, but I hope as soon as possible (=yesterday ...) you will solve our (your) serious problem with a great upgrade.
Thanks
Alberto (Italy)

Why is it so difficult to get a progress report? And Adobe is still selling LR4? Seriously?
The "work-arounds" don't "work" for everyone. Many of us don't have LR3 to fall back on, and down-loading a HUGE program that we don't need and may not have space or time for is oddly interesting but not particularly practical. I'd be happy with a simple update, folks.
