Lightroom: Edit In External Editor does not work/function

I can not send images from LR4 to any external editor via Photo>Edit In. My system is Mac OS 10.7.3. Using the Edit In command fails to open the external editor and no error message results. This occurs whether the images have the 2012 Process Version applied or not. My external editors are primarily PSE10 and Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.0. This is an important part of my workflow.

I have reinstalled PSE10 and updated to the newest version of Silver Efex Pro.

I solved the problem by downloading CS5 (OS X). I never opened CS5.

When does the trial expire if CS5 is never launched?

Where is the CS5 uninstaller located?

Thanks.

"When does the trial expire if CS5 is never launched?"

It shouldn't expire, but even if it does, it wouldn't affect the workaround.

"Where is the CS5 uninstaller located?"

It's in the Photoshop application folder - it's called "Uninstall Adobe Photoshop CS5"

I just received a mail by Nik software. Among other things they say:

"Important information on compatibility of Nik Software plug-ins with Lightroom 4

Adobe update for Lightroom 4 to be released soon

Some users have experienced problems when using external plug-ins within Lightroom 4. The reason for this a bug in the retail version of Lightroom 4, which unfortunately may also affect Nik Software plug-ins under certain circumstances. Adobe is already working on a solution, which will be available with their next update.
Upon release of this update by Adobe Nik Software plug-ins can be used within Lightroom 4 as usual. Please make sure to download the newest version of your plug-ins before using them in Lightroom".

I shared this info just to let everybody know that Adobe, Nik and most probably the other plugin companies are collaborating to solve the problem. When I noticed the bug in my just-bought LR4 I was very upset, as most of us. But seeing that companies, and especially Adobe are working seriously on it, makes me feel better.
We are not being left alone with the software we bought, let's be patient.

A suggestion to Adobe customer care: maybe sending a mail to customers who bought LR4 on Adobe's site, explaining the situation, could be a good way of letting customers know you care about them. This will not avoid completely angry messages on fora, because many people may have bought it somewhere else, but sure it would help in keeping things smooth.

Good work everybody!

I have the latest versions of the software from Nik and Athentech and neither work with LR4. I contacted Athentech and Nik and got a reply only from Athentech and they said re-install but as I said, neither still work

I too can't now use Nik Software's Silver Efecs Pro 2 (latest update) and Perfectly Clear LR since installing the Lightoom 4 upgrade. The suggestion to delete the co.adobe.Photoshop.plist file doesn't either as that plist file isn't there. Come on Adobe, fix this please!

I feel better knowing that Adobe is taking responsibility for the problems. Strongly suggest that the tech help desk be made aware of this! All they do is point the finger at Nik and tell you that you are on your own.

Topaz Labs responded to my enquiry saying that they were getting a few complaints and were investigating the issue. I had found this site so I told them that the problem was at Adobe and that JustMe06 had given a workaround that works for windows. Got a nice thank you from Topaz.

Downloading the trial version of CS5 worked for me. The Topaz Plug-ins are now accessible with the "edit in" command. Seems like a reasonable containment as long as you have enough harddrive space. Apparently the fix won't expire with the trial offer either.

i downloaded the trial version of CS5 onto my mac and the plugins are now working. But i notice that when using the adjustment brush there is quite a delay and it looks like the screen is refreshing in that ti goes black comes back on and all the develop sliders are greyed out then come back.

anyone else seen this?

As a workaround, I recommend the exporting to disk path.

- same location as the original file
- set the filenaming to IMG_7373_SilverEfex.tif
- edit with Color Efex Pro 4

Benefit: The work of file name templates
Disadvantage: manual sync of the LR catalog needed

Wish @ Adobe: Anyone who works in LR with many external editors, wants for each editor its one file naming template.

Same problem here. I have an iMac running OS Lion. I just upgraded to Lightroom 4. Lightroom 3 ran great with Photoshop Elements 10 until I did the upgrade. I wish I had not done that now. Some people have reverted back to LR3...can anybody tell me how to do that without messing up my catalog??? I appreciate any help in this matter. I love LR...it's so sad that there are so many issues right now. Can't use my Presets that I have purchased without converting the Process back to 2010. Uggghhhh!!!

As far as I can tell, if you did not delete your Lr 3 catalog, it is still there just as it was and if you open Lr3.6 it will open it just fine since it can't open the Lr4 catalog.
The only thing inaccessible will be the new work you may have done in Lr4, but then all you have to do is import the originals into Lr3 and proceed as before.
I have both Lr3 and Lr4 working and I can even have them open at the same time - they don't appear to interfere with each other, other than to slow things down a bit if you have a limited machine but with an Intel iMac you will barely notice!Hope that helps.

Decided to stick with LR3 also until this problem is sorted out. This will no doubt go down as a low point in Adobe's history.

Adobe just tells people to download and install a trial version of CS5, which I have done and it fixes all the problems. I am just keeping fingers crossed that Adobe has the new release within the 30 day trial period. At least I can keep working and enjoying the other aspects of LR4 for now.

I am not even using CS5. Haven't even opened it. As to how it fixes the problem, i have NO idea. All I know is it works! All my Nik and PSE exports and "Edit In..." functions now work after the CS5 trial installation.

Since some of us were forced to do the rather long and voluminous download of CS5 just to straighten the kink that Lightroom 4 has put into our lives, I believe the correct thing (besides making the fix to Lr4 available ASAP) would be for Adobe to allow us to keep CS5 as compensation.

I don't know about others, but in my case this has taken quite a few hours out of my life!
I rather think that my time is as valuable as Adobe time!

I had the same problem with LR4 and plugins from Topaz. I have PS3 and am not interested in downloading PS5. Here is what I sent to Topaz and their response:

I followed instructions for removing old versions of Fusion Express and reinstalled. I purchased two plugins as well today,Topaz Adjust and Star Effects. When I attempt to edit photo in Lightroom 4 by selecting a photo, then choosing Photo, edit in, Fusion Express2 64bit, I receive the message Unexpected error performing command: bad argument #1 to \'lower\'(string expected, got nil). I have 6GB of RAM on a Dell N5010 laptop with an Intel i5 2.53Ghz processor, using Windows 7 64bit.

Response from Topaz help:

Hello,

It seems that the issue with Plug-ins and there compatibility is on Adobe's end, and supposedly they are going to be releasing a new version on LR4 that is compatible (a 4.1 version) asap.

Please see here for more info: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photosh...

Let me know if you have any other questions.

You can add me to the list of those who can't launch an external editor. I have tried everything to add PS Elements as my editing but get the same error. I was the reply with the workaround of installing the free Trial Version of PSE10 or CS5. I don't quite understand that though because I have PSE10 (registered). Or is that implynig if I uninstall and reinstall my problems will disappear?

Thanks
