I use LR 2.7 and just switched to 4.1. Extremely slow import of RAW files(5dIII)
In LR 2 it would take maybe a few minutes to import 2,000 files. It took more than 10 on 4.1!

My System: Win7, 16gb ram, 7200RPM HD, AMD 1090T CPU(6 cores)

Version 2.7 didn't support the 5DMKIII so how are you comparing these?

Why can't I compare? 5DII and III have the same file sizes and I should be able to import them at the same speed. Either way, 5DII files are being imported in LR4.1 MUCH faster than 5DIII files.

No one said you couldn't. I just asked how, as a Mark III isn't supported on LR 2.7. It was only after I asked that you included the information about the 5DMKII files being used as comparison.

The comparison you should make to help pin down if there is a problem is how fast does a 5DMKII set import on Version 2.7 vs 4.1 and leave the MKIII files out for the time being. That would help tell us if it is a software version issue or a camera version issue.

Are you generating 1:1 previews on import? Are you counting the time for all the previews to be generated? That is, what operations are you counting as the 10 minutes?

Try purging the ACR cache if you are seeing slow preview generation. It can't hurt, and it might help.

John, I am talking just about the import. When the images are actually being imported to the catalog. Generating previews is a 2nd stage and has always been painfully slow(not anywhere near photomechanic's speed...) The 10 minutes is just to import the files then the preview generation would start.

Having the same problem. Importing new photos into LR 4.1 RC is painfully slow compared to LR 3.

Importing raws and jpgs into LR 4.1RC is painfully slow, specially compared to LR 3.

Importing images in place from fast internal hard drive. Imports that used to take seconds in LR 3 now take minutes in LR 4.1.

Running on Mac Pro ( Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro1,1

LR4 (Trial) on Windows 7 64-bit.
During "Import from Disk", when I browse to a folder containing many sub-folders (620 as it happens) the first few are displayed quickly but the remainder don't show up for a couple of minutes.
The number of folders initially displayed seems to always be the exact number that fit in the current window, it isn't until the couple of minutes have passed that the scroll bar becomes active.

I've been trying to import some RAW photos into lightroom 4, however the process has been quite painful. The import process takes at least 5 minutes to start loading the thumbnails and once I am able to select the images I want (which seems very sluggish) it takes 45 minutes to simply import 2.5gb of photos. Similarly, I tried Picasa 3 to import the photos which took only about 10 minutes to copy the photos to the same drive (but different folder).

Not sure why its taking so long to do an import or tell me it is doing the import. I have a Core2Duo with 6gb of ram and on Windows 7 64bit.

Well I just tested this on standard jpg files and it takes quite a long time as well though nowhere near as long as raw which would seem to make sense. (the previous poster asked about the card reader) I am using one mutli-card readers that plug into the usb pins on the motherboard and is using standard windows drivers.

Any word on why this is taking so long? Or a way to see what its hanging up on?

I am trying to import NEF files from a Nikon D800, but ~200 images takes more than 3hrs on a 4 core (8 thread) 2.66GHz Windows 7 machine with 12GB of RAM running a SATA 3 SSD (~500MB/sec write speed).

The bottleneck is not the card reader - it is a USB 3 unit that reads at ~62MB/sec, so to just transfer the files takes only ~1.5min.

Whilst importing I am doing nothing else with Lightroom (or the PC), yet the Lightroom process is using ~96% of the processor and 1.5GB of RAM.

Any ideas?

It is slow with other imports, but nothing like this.
