LR3: Won't let me create folder

I have a strange problem with LR3.6. I have a drive with folders by year. This year I added "2012". But LR won't let me add it! It says "The name 2012 is already taken. Please choose a different name." But there is no such folder in the LR folder list. Any ideas how I can correct this?

When you're creating a folder in the Lightroom folder panel, it is creating the same folder on your hard drive. If you already have a 2012 folder in that location on the hard drive, but haven't imported that folder into Lightroom, then the folder wouldn't appear in Lightroom.

I have tried importing the folder. I have also tried adding it from the "+" above the folders list. The photos are added to the "previous import" but not to the folders list.

If the photos are in previous import, then they should be in the folders list, but perhaps it's not displaying as expected. Try this:

In "Previous Import" select one of the photos you know is in the 2012 folder.
From the Photo menu, select "Go to Folder in Library"
In the folders panel, note which folder is highlighted.

When you know which folder a photo is located in, you can determine where that folder is in relation to the 2012 folder on your hard drive. If the highlighted folder is inside of 2012, you can right click on the highlighted folder and choose "Show Parent Folder" to get 2012 to appear in the folders panel.

Hope that helps - post back if you have questions.

The problem is, when I select a photo and then select "go to folder in library" no folder is highlighted! The import is 28 photos, 14 in each of two sub-folders. When I select "go to folder in library" the only thing that changes is that half the photos are removed from display.
