Lightroom: Spot Removal freeze (Win 7)

I have just bought Light Room3 (v3.5) on Dell Latitude E6520 with an Intel Core i7-2720QM processor, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. I store my photos on a RAID5 NAS. When using the spot removal on .jpg files (so far it has not happened on raw - Nikon D7000 16MP .nef files) if use the tool more than twice in a row, LR freezes - the little hand makes a fist, processor works, memory used increases - looks like program is in a never ending loop). If I stop the program and re-start, the change is there. I notice on the web that this has been a problem for over a year but I cannot find a sensible fix. (There are many suggestions about bad drivers, bad power supplies etc.) Is there a fix? if so, what is it and where do I get it?

From some initial testing in the LR4Beta it would seem the problem may well be fixed in that release.

The only problem with LR4 is that it is LR4, not LR3. Which means that to get the issue fixed we will have to pay $$ in the end.

I will be satisfied as soon as the product I paid for will work as advertised. Is there anything wrong with that?

I do agree that fixing a bug in the product should not come at the cost of the user. If the "fix" can't be applied to LR3, then refunds or rebates need to be issued to those with the problem. (Or free/discounted downloads of LR4)

Lightroom keeps freezing and stops responding when I use the spot removal tool 60% of the time I have to shut down Lightroom using the task manger and then reopen. Any solutions. This was happening in Version 3.5 as well as 3.6

George and Beat -

While it's a very frustrating problem that needs to be fixed, your detailed investigation is incredible. Thank you for your focus and posting your findings and how do "resolve" by managing CPU affinity settings.

I'm encouraged to see LR4 appears to fix it, though share the concern that it should be fixed in an LR3 update rather than having to wait, then buy the LR4 production release.

Hi Sue,
I too would like to see it fixed in an LR3 update but I do undersand that this may not actually be possible (depending on what had to be changed, the 'fix' may not be backward compatible) However I am hoping that the cost of the up[grade may be minimal. I am however heartened by the amount of discussion this has stimulated. I may still have the problem, but I no longer feel alone with the problem.
Cheers

George, thank you for being so persistent with this. Because of your work I have at least gained a tremendous amount of information about this problem and similar instances. Too bad there doesn't seem to be a fix that will be applied to LR3...

Hi John,
I think Beat is the one who made the breakthrough about the problem being due to multi-hreading. I only expanded a little on it.

Adding to the choir, Lightroom 3.6 freezes when I use the heal tool. I have to kill it with Task Manager. I observe 50-70% CPU usage on all cores. Lightroom process is slowly allocating more RAM. My computer: Intel i5 750, 16GB RAM, GeForce 9500 GT (driver version 296.10), Windows 7 64-Bit. If I set Lightroom's processor affinity to one core Lightroom no longer freezes.

Lightroom 3.6 running on Windows 7 Pro with 8 GB RAM and 6 core AMD CPU. Use of Develop: Spot Removal hangs application and is very repeatable. Recently purchased LightRoom 3.6 and the school is not ready to purchase upgrade to 4.

An internet search for this problem resulted in numerous hit, so I believe this is a common issue. This feature is important to my student's workflow and certainly impacts their impression of Adobe's products.

Hi Paul, Yep it is a pain and a disappointment and I believe it is actually fixed in Lightroom 4. But like you I am not about to buy that (at least till I find out that it doesn't have similar problems). I have started using raw files so it no longer effects me.

Cheers
George
