Lightroom mobile: On iPad uploading to Facebook at very low resolution

When i try and share an image from LRM to Face book on my iPad (everything is up to date) i find the image quality very low. Saving the same images out to the photo app and then uploading them is fine. So the image quality is being degraded only when sharing the images. Been happening for a few months now so its not just the current version.

Dave,

I haven't been able to duplicate what you are seeing.  It might help if we had some additional details. What is the original source and pixel dimension of the image? How did it arrive on your iPad? Are you sharing it via Camera Roll or via the Lightroom App sharing feature?

Thanks for the reply. Ill try and explain a bit more. I have already stated that its going from LRM to FB, and how i work around this but here it is in more detail.

The images are Canon raw files. These get transferred to the Camera roll via an SD card reader. I then add them to the LRM library. Once ive edited them i can select them to Share via FB. Using either the max size or the smaller size they get uploaded to FB as low res files. I can see artifacts in areas like sky, although the dimensions are correct.
Now, if i export them using the same sizes to the Camera roll, and upload them to FB using Safari (or Chrome or Firefox for IOS) the files have a much higher quality. So its not FB thats changing them. I appreciate FB does mess with images but not in the way im seeing just from IOS.

This to me might indicate that its down to the way IOS might be integrating the uploading process to FB, as i also see this issue if using the FB app to upload images.

I hope that helps. Its not always been this way, but i did notice it a good few months ago. IIR i read Victoria Bamton saying that it had been noticed by others as well, in reply to a post i put on FB a while ago.

Oh, and im happy to send you a raw file (one that i have seen with this issue) if you wanted to play with it, but to be honest its all the files im using, although its not always noticeable.

I have a similar issue. I'm not sure if it is a Lightroom or a Facebook problem.  To reproduce:

Use Lightroom mobile to "Share" an image and select email. If you open the image it will be reasonably high resolution 2560px on long edge.

Then, use Lightroom mobile to "Share" an image to Facebook.  Go to facebook and download the image--it will be 960px on the long edge.

I'm staring to think it is a Facebook issue, in that I get the same result if I upload an image using it on my IOS device. From the photos app. If I upload the image using Safari I get better results.
So, somewhere in the background it looks like LRM might be linking in to the FB app to upload. Could be wrong but if so I wonder how this can be fixed.

I’ve tested this issue. Fuji RAW in LR Mobile saved to iPad Pro camera roll. Used an iOS EXIF viewer to confirm the RAW size in the camera roll. Made sure my FB app had HD photo uploads turned on (which causes FB to resize the ling edge to 2048). Posted to FB from camera roll and the long edge in FB was resized to 2048 (verified by saving that image and viewing its EXIF. Now, took the same large pic in LR Mobile and shared it directly wPfrom LR to FB. When saving that and viewing its EXIF data the size of the long edge was 960 - FB low res. I’m concluding that LR is not using the iOS settings for FB uploads.

Good post. I hadn’t thought of checking that. Ive just done the same test and I see the same thing, LR is uploading low res no matter what size you ask for,.
Unbelievable that this bug is still around after all these months, and in fact Adobe make a big deal out of being able to share to social media.

Hi Dave, thanks for raising this. I have had similar problems in the past using an iPad. Is this all fixed now using Lightroom cc on your iPad or still experiencing the same problem? I bought myself a MacBook last year as hated my holiday snaps go up at such low res but have an iPad again so fingers crossed

Still there, or was a few weeks ago. I don't even bother now, i just save directly to the Photos app and upload using Safari on the ipad. I dont trust the FB app either.

It's still there as of today, using iOS 12 beta on an iPad Pro & LR Mobile. Amazing really

Thanks for the input everyone. I've been advised that we are dealing with a Facebook issue here and there isn't much we can do from the Lightroom side.  Dave's workaround a few posts up is the workaround that will ensure the dimensions aren't reduced.
