I have just opened LR6 and immediately an entire folder of photographs that I was exploring yesterday, have been deleted. This is not just from LR but also from my hard drive. What now?

Patrick,

What was the folder location of the images where they were 'yesterday'? Were they on a local hard drive, external drive, network drive, other?

Normally I would say the first place to look is the Trash/Recycling.

You explored the folder with Lightroom - so you imported the folder first I guess? Or did you add a folder with the "add folder" option in the folder part of the left window pane in gallery view? Maybe it got renamed?

If it was imported maybe it's just in a position you can't remember. You can try searching in you operating system for a filename if you know one, or part of one, or you can try to restore a catalog backup and see if they reappear (please backup actual catalog first in a separate location!)

Bizarre really. I imported them from a CF card a few days ago and worked on them over the next few days. Yesterday I exported them as JPG files to a flash card to show them to family, and shut down LR. Today I opened LR and momentarily the images were in their folder and then all disappeared, not only from the LR catalogue but also from their folder on my hard drive. I may have shut down LR yesterday with them all selected, and when I opened LR today perhaps I inadvertently touched the space bar or something and the whole lot were somehow deleted automatically. I cannot understand how or why and it makes me think the program is unstable in some respect. Not a nice experience. Thankfully my two camera cards still contain all 700 of them, but I have restored them from the recycle bin, and they are the original DNG files - unedited therefore - and blow me if my NAS system didn't backup today's catalogue  file before I could restore it. Murphy's law. At least I still have the edited jpg files
