LR Classic takes up to 60 seconds to switch to tool with keyboard short cut like "R" (Framing/Crop)

I edit on a Win7 64-bit 32Gig RAM Ivy Bridge desktop. LR Classic's screen flashes, hangs momentarily, *and* long delays switching with keystroke shortcuts. I timed a request by keystroke (while already in Develop) for the framing tool at almost 60 seconds.

Some of this behavior I blame on my AMD Radeon R9 GPU, but editing 13 images for a client organization took VERY long time last night. Losing too much sleep because of Lightroom downhill slide.

Classic was described as faster. Yes I plan to build a Coffee Lake machine this Fall when processors actually ship, but the performance is now worse than last week with already-slow "LightroomCC" and I was *already* frustrated. New machine will have nVidia but I am now using CaptureOne and Iridient Transformer for part of my workflow.

Hi Jonathan,

Are you facing this issue when you have turned on the GPU ?
Preferences -> Performance -> Use Graphics processor check box

How is the behaviour when you uncheck this checkbox ? (not using GPU basically)

Thanks,
Arjun

Arjun,
Thanks for your reply. I have had the GPU set OFF for several years. Checking the GPU has never helped, only hindered. During the change to Classic it remained off (was not changed automatically by the migration.)
Reading your reply I turned it on and, first impression: it really helps with, for instance, the speed of response to the keystroke request for framing tool ("R") I described above. It might have sped up the rendering for the screen that is needed from a Standard preview.
I will watch things closely.
