The answer is in the log. "Check and correct folder & parent directory permissions and then try again." The installer can't write to the directory in question.

OK  thanks. Lovely speedy and helpful service.

Just like to add tho  - That solution may have been obvious to you, as an Adobe employee, but as a user who has never looked at these folders, and never changed permissions (probably not on any file Adobe or otherwise), that is not something I would automatically do without checking. LR Classic 8.3 installed perfectly (just a couple of days ago) as did every other LR update I've ever had, and I have never been in any of these folders.  So why should 8.3.1 fail? For a user to start changing permissions now without checking is I feel a slightly unusual instruction.

As it happens, LR failed to start completely after the failed update so as I needed to finish a job, I uninstalled, deleted all these folders and re-installed. All now OK.

Glad to hear it's all OK now. Hard to say what changed the permissions. It's usually an outside process. Did LR crash prior to the update?

No, no crash.

To be fair, I cannot recall Lightroom crashing on me ever.
