LR Catalog PROBLEM:::::: I tried to help a friend today combine two LR Catalogs. He had LRv3 and upgraded to LR v5.7. When I went to import the LR3 catalog it upgraded it to LR5 (so it said). When it open the 16868 images were missing. I was in a controlled panic as I started to figure out what had happened. What I discovered was the images were still on the external HD (oh good, I can breathe now before I turn blue). But the previous file names IM_8234.CR2 were now something like 20070414 206802968920680 IM_8234.CR2 ... Anyone have any ideas why this happened? And is there a way to remove the extra numbers in the files? I suggested renaming the files to something meaningful after they are imported into the new LR catalog. I am open to ideas and need the help to fix this. email me at mmltdii@gmail.com if you have a long idea on how to fix this. Thank you

So the files on the hard drive - are they still the IM_ ones, or the long ones?  And which ones are showing in the LR3 catalog?

It doesn't sound like anything LR's done - either user error or more likely another program - but there may be a way to fix it.

Mac or Windows?

Windows and the library has 16868 empty squares as all the images are missing because they were renamed.

writing a program that does the rename automatically on all files in a directory should be a piece of cake, provided all the original filenames have a recognizable pattern, e.g. start with IM_ and end with .CR2

apps like this probably exist already
