Lightroom Classic 8.0: Screen goes black with Local Adjustment Brush

LR 8.0 worked well at the start, several weeks ago.  But now it is not!  When using adjustment brush to edit an image the screen sometimes goes black and at top "not responding".  Also has become very slow when using the adjustment brush.  Updated graphics card driver, but same whether checked or unchecked in LR.  Talked with Adobe support and they had me optimize catalog only.  Still the same.  Today I uninstalled then reinstalled LR no change.  It is at a point where it takes way too much time to now use.      Need help!

Hello Robert,

When you updated your graphics driver where did you get the update from? Windows? or at the video card manufacturer's website?   The issue you describe looks suspiciously like a video driver issue - both the black screen and the slowness of the adjustment brush.  Which video card do you have? Do you have dual cards in your system (or a video on the motherboard and a separate video card)?

I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti card and I updated from the makers website.

I just realized that I did the driver update through windows device manager.
From device manager properties the version listed is - 25.21.14.1634

The Windows updates tend to run behind a few versions but that version looks current. You should probably go to the nVidia site anyway and get their latest driver (416.34). I would recommend a clean install of the nVidia driver to be sure: https://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_13955.html

When I upgraded to Windows 10 1803, the current NVidia driver was replaced with a version coming from Microsoft. After that, my secondary display was no longer recognized in LR. I had to update from the NVidia site.

I've updated the driver directly from nvidia and so far seems to be working.  Have to put some time into editing some images and will update you of the results.  Thanks for the help.

Still some problems.  When moving between images the screen will go black and "not responding" message comes up for a few seconds.  Using the adjustment brush seems to work better than before, but!

Contacted Nivdia support via chat and hopefully a resolution.  Have to work with LR for awhile to confirm that everything is okay.  Nivdia had me make a change in the Nivdia control panel concerning power management -  : The power management settings help in most of the cases. Here's on how to do it: 
1.Go to NVIDIA control panel > 3 D settings > manage 3 D settings.
2.Program settings > add the .exe file of the app > set the power management mode to prefer maximum performance.
3.Click on Apply, close the control panel, launch the app and check if it helps.

No black screens and brush adjustment is a lot more responsive.  Hope it holds.

I started having the same problem yesterday. When I saw this report appear in my email and clicked on the reply, I was pleased to see Rikk Flohr had responded with a suggestion. Rikk, you had helped me tremendously a few months ago when I was having major problems with the Creative Cloud Desktop application, so I followed up on your suggestion and Mr. Harvey's suggestion from Nividia. I am happy to report that LR is now working much, much better. The solutions certainly worked. Thanks to both of you. Bob Walter

I thought the issue was fixed, but started using LR and same problem again!!  Using adjustment brush - very slow showing mask and then screen goes black with"not responding" and back to image.  Delete adjustment and same thing - screen goes black with "not responding".  :(

Mr. Harvey: I am sorry to hear that the problem has returned for you. Thus far, LR has been behaving itself. I used the adjustment brush/masking yesterday with no problems, fortunately. Perhaps Rikk will have some other ideas when he sees your post. I will keep you all apprised of my experience should the problem reappear. Bob

Could you post the system info from both Lightroom and Photoshop? (They give slightly different info/details on the GPU an its settings)

Nothing sticks out to me there. Have you tried disabling Use Graphics Processor completely?

I’ve tried many times disabling GPU, but same problem. Have reinstalled LR but same again. I just dropped off my computer at the shop that built it and their going to do a diagnostic test on the hardware to see if any problems there.
If nothing then how do I contact Adobe about this problem without being transferred to India and a person that is unable to speak understandable English?

Unfortunately I'm back!  Had the computer stressed tested by the shop that built it and all they found was the SSD that had LR software and catalog on it had some bad sectors.  So had the SSD replaced.  But today again working with the adjustment brush similar problems but not as offend.  Also opening and image in Library then in Develop the screen would go black several times again with the "not responding".  But once open and try the same process and no problem.  

I want some help from Adobe with this problem, PLEASE!

Robert, I watched your video but I have not seen that behavior before. It isn't clear to me from reading your posts if you have done the following:

1. Gone to your Video Card manufacturer's website and downloaded and performed a clean install of their latest driver? 

2. Reset your preference file.

Can you confirm both of these?

Additionally - are you using a mouse, tablet or other device to do your brush-stroking? If so, which and is that driver up to date?

I have the most recent updated driver for the GPU from the Nvidia web site.

I use a Wacom tablet, driver up to date, and a Razer mouse also driver up to date.

What do you mean to reset the preference file?

? - I have Lightroom program and the LR catalog on the same SSD, is that okay?

Same drive is fine. 

A Preference File will survive a Lightroom uninstall/reinstall. Sometimes weird behavior is corrected/cured by resetting the preferences. 

Reset Procedure:

1. Close Lightroom.
2. Hold down [Alt/Opt]+[Shift] while restarting Lightroom. 
3. Overwrite the Preferences when prompted by the dialog.
4. Close Lightroom.
5. Restart Lightroom.

Does the behavior continue after resetting the preferences?

Reset the preferences and so far no black screens.  Also the adjustment brush seems to work better.
Going to have to play with it for a while to make sure that that solves the problem.  Will get back later.

Did not fix problem!!  Still when using adjustment brush screen goes black with "not responding".

Robert,

Did you check the location and size of your Adobe Camera RAW cache and whether it has enough room there ? You could also try to purge it.

There's something else that you could try : load the same image in PS (Adobe Camera RAW) and try the same edits. This could help determine whether it's a LR or a more generic problem.

Also, since your problem is sometimes appearing only after a while (you had sessions where LR was working correctly), this makes me think about a disk space problem (you have plenty of memory anyway). Your catalog is in E:\LIGHTROOM\Lightroom 5 catalog\LR5. So your previews are also stored there. You should make sure that this partition has enough space for storing them (you can discard the previews from the Library menu, just to check).

Finally, I remember having had a similar problem for images where I had defined too many local adjustments or when the area covered by these adjustments was too large. Just to be sure...

Yes, you could try this. This is an harmless operation. Previews will be rebuilt on demand. By the way, you could also have a look at the preview settings of your catalog. Don't make the standard size too much bigger than the screen size.

LR Program, LR cache, other Adobe programs, Presets and LR raw backups are all on E: which is a 500 GB SSD with 350GB of free space.
