Are all of your Canon files which you are attempting the exact same pixel dimensions? File Types?

yes, i have also duplicated a single raw and modified exposure for use in LR HDR so that all parameters match. LR does not respond at all; it's as if i did not attempt to merge.

Have you reset your preferences file by: Closing Lightroom, holding down [Alt/Opt][Shift] and relaunching Lightroom and accepting the dialog asking you to overwrite your preferences?

I think Lr 6.3/Lr CC 2015.3 fixed a bug like this.

You're right, Simon - problem solved. At least for Leica Monochrom DNGs.
