well what happened to me needs an explanation!!! Please if someone can help me with this.. I moved a folder that included the raw files folder, jpeg and catalog folder to an external HD with all the changes I made . Next time I open lightroom ircat from external HD doesn't find the photos.. OK!! I go and right click the folder in window and update folder location! Disaster!!!! the progress bar started  and to cut long story short, lost all changes but the most weird for me is that all original files lost their given filenames I gave plus that all (DELETED files from Disk and from TRUSH been) as well came back in the RAW folder!!!!!!! How this can happen when the ircat file is like 57 MB and I deleted myself the unwanted files from the trush as well. Finally I'm back in day first with all files like I imported them from my CF Card. I NEED to find a way to bring back all changes I made!!!! please help!!!!!

I had.. but I erased after I complete transfer and confirm it! I knew that I had to do this update location folder to see them again. I did it several times in the past.. But how the deleted files came back in the original RAW folder? It was 1496 files, kept only 1037. The rest were thrown away and deleted from trash as well!!???????

It sounds like you are trying to open the wrong catalog file. From inside LR go to File> Open Catalog and select the LR .lrcat file that is now located on the external drive.

You may have moved the wrong LR catalog to the external drive. Search both your local and external hard drives using Finder or Windows File Explorer for .lrcat in the search box. Then open each of the LR catalog files found from inside LR using File> Open Catalog.

It's  important to keep backup copies of all image files and LR catalog backup files on a separate external drive reserved strictly for backup purposes. Do you have  a backup drive with those copies? You can also check your Mac Trash or Windows Recycle bin for the missing files. If not they can't be found there search both your local and external hard drives using Finder or Windows File Explorer for the file names that are missing (Example IMG_0100.NEF, IMG_0100.JPG. They could have been inadvertently moved to a different folder location, which will show up if you do a search on the root of the drive (C:/, D:/).
