A very useful addition in PS will be the ability to resize to the long side in ‘file automate’ like in the LR output option. This will save having to rotate images before the automate and then rotate back afterwards so that portrait & landscape images are the same size.

File - Automate - Fit Image is what you are looking for and it's been there for a number of versions.

Hello Paul and thanks for replying.
I see what you mean, but I didn't explain myself properly. I would like to batch process a folder of differently sized images, both landscape & portrait and have the longest side of each resized to a designated length. The resulting files can then be saved in another folder, so keeping the originals. Fit image doesn't allow for this. Please correct me if I have it wrong.

Yes it does, another way is to use Image Processor and that has "Resize to Fit".
Both let you resize to the longest side. you can use "Fit Image" as part of an action and used in batch.
Both will do exactly what you want.

Thank you Paul, you have saved me a lot of time and effort. I've been using Photoshop since V3 and I missed this.

Hi im Abu and i am trying to automate images with the longest side of 15cm and a dpi of 305 and also maintain a 1cm border around the image itself. normally i would use a cliping path and make a selection thereafter expand selection by 120px (for 305res)and hit trim it will give me a perfect 1cm border around but my longest side thereafter needs to be 15cm and if i hit fit image it doest give me a nice perfect border around my image of 1cm with 15cm on the h or w depending on the long side with a res of 305 basicaly i want 15cm longest side with 305 res and 1cm perfect border around image please help me out!!!

Your question is very confusing but I THINK what you need to do is resize to 14cm and then add the 1cm border. Image Processor Pro lets you run an action after resizing, I'd look into that.
