Hi, I would like to create a catalog of images in Lightroom CC 2019 from an external hard drive on my MacBook Pro.
I want to be able to see all the folders and images on the external hard drive but don't want to copy the images to my MAC as I don't have enough space.
Is this possible or do I need to copy them on to my MAC, a folder at a time, then move them off again?

Cheers

Scott,  Assuming you're using LR Classic CC, what you want is done all the time.

Just open Lr as you normally do, then click the Import button at the bottom left of the Library module grid view.  In the subsequent Import Dialog window, in the left section, navigate to the external drive and select one or more folders.  If the folder or folders you select have sub folders tick the "Include subfolders" box at the top of the Source panel.  All the images in the selected folders will show up in the middle section.

Here's the key point.  At the top of the middle section select "ADD".   The "Add" option leaves the images right where they are but makes LR aware of them such that it can manage them.

Choose whatever options you desire in the right panel group then clickk the "Import" button at the bottom right

PS - there is no need to create a new catalog for the external drive,  One catalog is just fine managing images on multiple drives (internal and external)

Hi Dan - Thank you very much for taking the time to answer that. It worked like a dream. I have a couple of disks I can now add to Lightroom.

Cheers Scott
