PHOTOSHOP: Linked smart objects can be a production bottleneck

The linked smart objects feature in Photoshop, while it is useful, is also a major production bottleneck. I've received several PSD files from outside sources that have missing links. People aren't used to having to package a PSD so now on top of dealing with missing links in InDesign and Illustrator we now have to worry about it with PSDs and the ripple effect to production is being felt. Also, what happens when a PSD with linked files is placed in IND, when you package out of IND does it know to get the linked files from the PSD as well?

I'm not a fan of warning popups but is there some way to let the user know that they MUST package the file if they are going to share it?
