This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: Photoshop CC 2019: Masks not applying to smart filters

In existing Photoshop versions, if you include a linked smart object, that layer's appearance shows whatever is the state of the smart object itself. However, in Photoshop CC 2018, version 20.0.1, this doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Instead, masks on Smart Filter are ignored in parent Photoshop document.

To replicate the issue:
  1. Create a blank photoshop file
  2. Insert a Linked Smart Object (.psb) from File > Placed Linked
  3. Edit the Linked Smart Object
  4. Apply a Smart Filter (e.g. Gaussian Blur)
  5. Apply a mask to the Smart Filter
  6. Go back to the parent photoshop file that you created and update the Smart Object. Notice how the Smart Filter applies to the entire image, not just the mask.
I have attached a screenshot of the issue. The Linked Smart Object is the desired outcome in the parent Photoshop File.
