I confess, My catalog is a little messy, so I decided to sync the main photo folder and make LR delete missing pictures and import a few new ones.
It starts the process OK, tells me the number of missing files that qill be removed and the number that will be imported, then when it reaches 70% it stops and nothing happens, and I have to force quit. Tried a couple of times, always the same.
BTW, when I quit, usually the program continues appearing in the task manager (Win 7, 64 bit) and I have to close it from there to release the RAM.

It sounds like it is getting stuck on a file, possibly one it does not recognize. If you don't have a lot of subfolders inside your main photo folder, you could try synchronizing each subfolder and see which one causes Lightroom to get stuck, then investigate the contents of that folder for files that aren't photos or videos.
